HomeMy WebLinkAbout02-27-18 CCAC © © © ____________________________________________________________________ The February 27th, 2018 meeting of the Community/Campus Advisory Coalition (CCAC) was called to order by Chairperson Gavin Ferlic at 3:30 p.m. in the Council Informal Meeting Room, located on the 4th floor of the County-City Building. NOTRE DAME UPDATES/CONCERNS: There is a housing fair happening on March 20th where property managers and landlords can come to campus and speak to students. The University will have resources represented at the fair as well. The goal of the fair is to help students make informed housing decisions. Hopefully someone from the City, maybe Code Enforcement, can have a booth there as well. It will be from noon until 3:00 p.m. in the new Duncan Student Center. Notre Dame Student Government just wrapped up elections and those positions will start their terms on April 1st. That last month serves as a good transition and possibly the next CCAC meeting will have both administrations present. April 14th is Back the Bend which is a day of service for the entire campus and the community. There is a meeting set up with St. Mary’s and Community/Campus Advisory Coalition (CCAC) 2 hopefully Holy Cross to start recruiting students from all three (3) campuses. We want community members to be able to sign up and anyone can sign up this year even without a Notre Dame email address. All groups are welcome to share any information about Back the Bend with the public. The website to sign up is backthebend.nd.edu. HOLY CROSS COLLEGE UPDATES/CONCERNS: There will be student government elections for next year’s administration in the middle of March. Those terms will start in the fall. There is a tri-campus class (with Notre Dame, Holy Cross and St. Mary’s) that is marching to Senator Joe Donnelly’s Office on March 2nd at 2:00 p.m. The march will begin at Holy Cross and march down to Senator Donnelly’s Office imploring Congress to pass a bill for the recipients of DACA. INDIANA UNIVERSITY SOUTH BEND UPDATES/CONCERNS: IU School of Medicine helped organize an opioid drop off which yielded almost eight hundred (800) pounds of opioids removed from the community. In the summer there will be a community health awareness program hosted by the IU School of Medicine. ST. JOSEPH COUNTY POLICE UPDATES AND CONCERNS: Officer Chandler announced that Notre Dame is doing design work on revitalizing the area north of campus on Douglas and State Road 933. The South Bend Tribune printed a design that has the center turn lane removed from State Road 933. The St. Joseph Police Department has received a lot of phone calls with concerns about this. The County Police and Fire services have issues with the plan as well as Memorial Hospital, which serves as the trauma center for the Niles, Michigan area whose emergency vehicles use that center turn lane regularly. If anyone has concerns regarding the removal of that lane they should contact the County Economic Development Department on the 11th Floor of the County-City Building. The hope is to keep the entire center lane and not just at the lights. RESIDENTS/NEIGHBORS UPDATES AND CONCERNS: A few businesses around IUSB have reported that officers have been more visible around River Park which is wonderful for the area and citations have been written for time violation tickets near the IUSB campus. Hopefully that helps with the parking issues because some students were parking all day in front of the businesses on Mishawaka Avenue. CITY OF SOUTH BEND UPDATES/CONCERNS: Code Enforcement is partnering with the River Park and the Near Northwest Neighborhood Associations to have neighborhood cleanup days. The Near Northwest Neighborhood day is happening the same day as Back the Bend and it is on their website. The River Park cleanup is April 28th. They are both in the morning. Code Enforcement is also trying to encourage the universities to remind their students to be good neighbors when they live off campus because Code has received some complaints, especially on East Washington Street. 3 March 17th is St. Patrick’s Day which is always a busy day for the SBPD. Everyone should try to be respectful neighbors and keep an eye on noise levels and trash. There haven’t been any major crime incidents recently near the campuses. IDEA week for 2018 is April 21st through April 27th. There will be a lot of great events like concerts and comedians coming to South Bend. The goal is to promote innovation and entrepreneurship in our region. The next CCAC meeting will take place on April 11th at 3:30 p.m. in the Council Informal Meeting Room.
