BEND Letter from the Mayor Gold award for neighborhood revitalization This recognition from our peer cities across the nation speaks to the quality of the transformation that is taking place in our Northeast Neighborhood and throughout South Bend. Dear Friends and Neighbors, Last month, for the second time since I've been mayor, a neighborhood revitalization effort in South Bend was given the Gold Award of Municipal Excellence by the National League of Cities. This is the top honor from the nation's oldest and largest municipal organization, and South Bend was one of four cities in different population categories recognized for this prestigious achievement. Back in 2002, the City shared the award with the South Bend Heritage Foundation for the Near West Side Revitalization Initiative. This time the City of South Bend was honored for the Northeast Neighborhood Revitalization, again with South Bend Heritage and other key institutional partners — the University of Notre Dame, Memorial Hospital, Madison Center, Saint Joseph Regional Medical and South Bend Clinic. The award recognized our participation in the formation of the Northeast Neighborhood Revitalization Organization, a partnership for redevelopment efforts that: ♦ Created a plan that led to the development of the $215- million Eddy Street Commons by Kite Realty Group, supported by $35 million in City infrastructure. ♦ Supported infill housing efforts by the Northeast Neighborhood Council and Notre Dame. ♦ Acquired and re- platted land to build more than 50 new low -to- moderate income and market -rate homes between Eddy Street Commons and Ind. 23. Also included in the award recognition was the City's involvement in the: ♦ Creation of Innovation Park at Notre Dame (along with the University and Project Future) as part of South Bend's dual -site, state - certified technology park. In the year since its founding, Innovation Park has been home to more than 30 clients. ♦ Location and expansion of the Indiana University School of Medicine at South Bend (with Notre Dame). ♦ Development of a master plan for reuse of the former Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center site, now likely to be the home to a new St. Joseph's High School. This recognition from our peer cities across the nation speaks to the quality of the transformation that is taking place in our Northeast Neighborhood and throughout South Bend. On Nov. 16, 2009, Innovation Park welcomed its first client, Unlimited Juice LLC. This promising; company is commercializing patent - pending technology that allows for the retrofitting of existin g p ortable consumer electronic devices ' with slim, environmentally friendly solar power sources. ' Over the course of the first year, the Innovation Park team met with and discussed the ideas of countless entrepreneurs, - eventually determining that 30 of these companies would represent a good match with the mission of the Park. Many of the others were referred to other sources, such as the Small Business Development Center, that more appropriately suited their needs. By the end of its first year, the Park has leased approximately 60 percent of its building space, providing a variety of resources and expertise to a client mix that includes advanced diagnostics; DNA sampling; drug discovery; health education; laser transmission; mobile apps; orthopedics; social ventures; wind turbine technology; and many more. Two companies that have already reached their stated goals, graduated from the Park and moved on to the next phase are Nexus RV, which will produce motor homes, and The Road to Fondwa LLC, which generated contributions for Haitian relief while promoting the documentary film, "The Road to Fondwa." Other clients have also made good progress on their milestones, with some writing grants, some launching their products and building their customer bases, some finding investors and others building prototypes.
