Mayor's Letter Snow Removal Eddy St. Commons Special Recognition New Year's Eve Fireworks Guidelines Christmas Tree Pickup & Snow removal In spite of the difficult times throughout the country, we are working hard in South Bend to continue to build the foundation for a strong and thriving city. As we enjoy the holiday season upon us and reflect back on the past year, we also look forward to the opportunities of the new year. In March 2010, more than 130 million addresses across the nation will receive a census questionnaire. One of the shortest census forms in history, the 2010 Census questionnaire asks 10 questions and takes about 10 minutes to complete. Completing your census questionnaire is easy, important and safe, and your participation is essential to ensuring a brighter tomorrow for our community. Required once every 10 years by the U.S. Constitution, the census will count every person living in the United States, both citizens and noncitizens. Census data are used to reapportion the U.S. House of Representatives, re- district each state and determine the distribution of the Electoral College. Census data also directly affect how more than $400 billion per year in federal funding is distributed to state, local and tribal governments. Most importantly, census data is critical in day -to -day planning activities for both local governments and private entities in determining, for example, locations for new hospitals, improving schools, building new roads, expanding public transportation options and creating new maps for emergency responders. A Complete Count Committee has been formed that covers every jurisdiction in St. Joseph County. The mission of the Committee is to raise AWARENESS, develop COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS, and galvanize CITIZEN INVOLVEMENT in accomplishing as complete a count as possi- ble. The Committee has participated in parades and has set up booths at various events throughout the County along with making contacts with schools, libraries, neighborhood organizations, and not - for - profit agencies. This needs to change, and with volunteer help from the citizens of South Bend, it will. Please go to the web site listed below, and consider becoming a Complete Count Ambassador, where volunteers will commit to encourage their neighbors, friends and co- workers to fill out their Census form and mail it in. The Census form is due to arrive in everyone's mailbox on or around March 15 -17, 2010. A sample of the Census form, and the Census form timeline, can be viewed at the web site noted below. By participating in the census, and committing to filling out and sending in your Census form, you can help create a better future for you and those important to you. The State of Indiana has calculated that for each person counted, approximately $826 per person, per year of Federal distributions is realized. After a Notre Dame Women's Basketball Game p on November 5th, two Washington High School students helped to resuscitate a woman who was unconscious and struggling to breathe. Using training that they had learned in the classroom, Lauren Miller and Malcolm White performed CPR on the woman until paramedics arrived. Congratulations to these two young heroes who helped to save a life. I I i Guidelines for Snow Removal i I • It is the responsibility of the owner or occupant of any premises on any city street to remove snow and ice from the public sidewalk within 24 hours I after snow or ice has accumulated. • If an owner or occupant fails to comply, the City I may remove snow and ice after giving the owner or occupant 24 hours written notice. The owner or occupant will then be responsible for the cost of i removal. The Dept. of Code Enforcement works with the Police Dept. to make sure abandoned vehicles are removed from city streets, especially during the I winter months. Abandoned vehicles are hazardous and obstruct snow removal crews from clearing streets for the safety of emergency I vehicles and the general public.
