HomeMy WebLinkAbout07/05/1978 Special Mtg Board of Public Works MinutesE SPECIAL MEETING JULY 5, 1978 A special meeting of the Board of Public Works was convened at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 5, 1978 by Chairman Pro -Tem Peter H. Mullen, in the absence of President Patrick M. McMahon, with Mr. Mullen and Mr. Brunner present. Mayor Peter J. Nemeth was also present. APPROVAL OF RECOMMENDATION TO REMOVE PARKING METERS "fr. Mullen read the following recommendation: "To: Board of Public Works From: Bureau of Traffic and Lighting Re: Parking Meter /Time Zones In compliance with the City's current policy on proposed downtown South Bend parking regualtions, this Bureau, as directed, presents the following: A. Removal from operation of all 12 minute, 1 hour and 2 hour parking meters from the streets of the City of South Bend. B. Installation of: No Parking No Regulations 15 1.14nute Limit' 30 Minute Limit* 1 hour limit',, 2 hour limit* 'All limited time zone parking to be in effect from: Monday - 8 AM to 9 PM. Tuesday through Saturday, 8 AM to 6 PM. The area being roughly bounded by Marion Street, Tavlor Street, Bronson and Michigan Street /St. Joseph"Streelt, more specifically indicated by the attached map. The goal of the "Meterless Parking System" is to provide controlled turnover and free use of on- street parking spaces. This will be accomplished through the use of: A. One or more 15 minute zones per side of street per block for the use of citizens requiring a short duration parking space. B. A 30 minute zone surrounding the "governmental block" (Main, Jefferson, Lafayette and Washington) to enhance the convenience of citizen /governmental related business. C. 1 hour zones in the area roughly bounded by St. Joseph, Western, Lafayette and LaSalle, where business transactions would require a medium duration parking space. D. 2 hour zones outside of the core Central Business District area, where long duration parking spaces would provide convenient access (with free parking) to the Central Business District. SPECIAL MEETING JULY 5, 1978 It is recommended that these changes go into effect immediately upon approval. The general public's attention is directed to follow the signage on the side of street and /or space they are parking in. s/ Ralph J.
