956, Mr. Charles J. Kalil's request of November 1, 1955 for a yearts leave
f absence from the Fire Department because of the illness of his son was
next discussed by the Board. The Board directed that a letter be sent to
alil requesting that he submit to the Board proof of the illness of his
on. A reply of the letter had been sent to Irving J. Smith, Chairman of
he Board notifying him that the said Kalil does not plan to come back to
outh Bend and that his leave of absence be terminated. Resignation of
aid Charles J. Kalil as of November 1, 1955 was approved by the Board this
5th day of March, 1956.
The monthly report from the City Sealer, Bert S. Cichowicz for the
month of January was accepted by the Board and filed.
Applicationt for the Fire Department were examined and filed for the
following: Francis Anthony Gruza, Eugene Joseph Wozny, Stanley Dominic
para.zynski, and Patrick Jerome Klaybor.
Applications for the Police Department were examined and filed for
he following: Richard Claude Brown, Chester Casmier Kregger, Jerry Ray -
ond Szweda.
The application for Auxiliary Police School Patrol was examined and
ordered filed for Helen Marie Gang.
There being no further business

A regular meeting of the Board of Public Safety was held Monday,

POLICE DEPARTMENT

Chief Dutrieux appeared before the Board with reference for request
of Patrolman Peter Marko for promotion from Patrolman to Sergeant. Re-
quest granted and is effective as of March 12, 1956.
The Uniform Committee of the South Bend Police Department,represent-
ed by Sgts. Maxson and Miller, appeared before the Board with reference
to the change in uniforms of the Police Department. The committed dis-
played a leather jacket and also an Eisenhower jacket and requested that
the Board consider a change for the uniforms. The Board having examined
the same_and took the matter under advisement.
Upon recommendation by the Chief of Police Dutrieux, the Board now
approves the appointment of Special Police to the following persons:
Daniel W. Richardson, Roy C. Eger, Charles E. Dempsey, Delmar J. Mack,
Maurice Cohen, and Joseph B. Kolo.
ELECTRICAL DEPARTMENT
Ira Hunsberger, Supt. of the Electrical Department, appeared before
the Board and matters pertaining to his department were discussed.
Ira Hunsberger, Supt. of the Electrical Department, recommends that
four 6000 lumen lights be installed from Lombardy Drive & Western Avenue
to Gladston Street and Western Avenue. Approved by the Board.
Ira Hunsberger recommends.that the light at College Street and El-
wood Avenue be increased from a 1000 lumen light to a 4000 lumen light.
Approved by the Board.
Ira Hunsberger recommends that a 1000 lumen light be installed at
Jefferson Street and 36th Street. Approved by the Board.
Ira Hunsberger recommends that a 4000 lumen light be installed on
Beale Street at the dead end at Riverside Drive and St. Joseph River.
Also, a light(4000) should be installed one block west of this location
at Beale and Cushing Streets. Approved by the Board.
Ira Hunsberger recommends that no light is necessary on Lindsey St.
between Cushing & Scott Streets. Approved by the Board.
A report of the list of materials used on State Highway traffic
signals in the City of South Bend, Indiana was submitted to the Board by
Ira Hunsberger. The matter was taken under advisement by the Board and
is now referred to the Traffic Engineer, Ernest H. Miller, for necessary
negotiation of the State Highway Commission.
Applications for the Police Department were examined and filed for
the following: John Thomas Przybysz, Henry Leonard Kruszewski, and Troy
Leon Holt.
Applications for the Fire Department were examined and filed for
the following: Edward Eugene Urbanski, Joseph Vandel Nagy, and Theodore
William Cebulski.
There being no further business to come before the Board, the meet-
ing was adjourned at 11:10 A.M. (CST).
