A regular meeting of the Board of Public Safety was held Monday,
December 19, 1955, at 10 :00 A. M. All members were present. Minutes of
the previous meeting =were read and approved. Salary claims, it the
total amount of $171,376.36, were approved. Claims of the following
suppliers, in the total amount of $10,934.54, were approved and ordered
paid:

FIRE DEPARTMENT.*
First appeared before the Board, Fire Chief, R. J. Duck, and
brought to the attention of the Board, the Fire Departmentts need for twa
new sedans for Fire Inspectors, use. Funds being available for this
purpose, the Board directd.d the Clerk to proceed to advertise for bids
accordingly.
The Chief then called attention to the need for three new
automatic The
in three of the Fire Stations using coal heat, and
presented three quotations reeeived from dealers in this type of equip-
ment. The Board examined the proposals and withheld decision in the matter
until the advice of a heating expert can be had on the subject.
The Chief then placed with the Board papers pertaining to the
physical condition of two firemen. Upon the recommendation of Dr.
Wm. J. Stogdill, Fireman Ray Mc Neff was, thereupon, retired from the
Fire Department, on the basis of a medical disability retir -e-ment.
Upon the recommendation of Dr. Wm. J.
Sikorski was retired from the Fire Departme man Alex

Chief Duck then recommended to the Board, the appointment of
Richard V. Breckrus to the department to fill an existing vacancy. The
Board reviewed the application of Mr. Brekrus and in complaince with
the Fire Chiefts recommendation, approved the appointment to become
effective December 20, 1955•
Upon the recommendation of Fire Chief Duck, the Board next
approved the promotion of Fireman Claude R'. _Borowski and Joseph
T. Jelinski to the rank of lieutenant, retroactive to December 16, 1955•
WEIGHTS & MEASURES:
Then appeared before the Board, Bert Cichowicz, Inspector of Weights
and Measures and brought to the attention of the Board, his departmentts
need for a portable dial scale,priced at $695.00. The need being apparent
and funds being available for such equipment, the Clerk was directed to
proceed with the purchase.
POLICE DEPARTMENT:
Chief of Police, Richard J. Gillen., was present to discuss with
the Board matters pertaining to his department.
TRICAL DEPARTMENT:
The recommendation of Supt. Ira Hunsberger for lighting on Olive
Street from Western Avenue to the New York Central tracks was approved
by the Board.
The recommendation of Supt. Ira Hunsberger for the proper lighting
of Ewing Avenue, from Fellows Street to High Street,in.cluding also
improved lighting for Riley High School, was next considered and approved
by the Board.
A petition, dated November 16, 1955, for the installation of street
lights in the 1400, 1500, and 1600 blocks of North Iowa Street, was
examined and referred to Superintendent Ira Hunsberger for investigation
and recommendation.
There being no further business to come before the Board, the
eeting was adjourned at 11 :35 A. M.
