Co. 14.72 IRE DEPARTMENT: First appeared before. the Board Fire Chief,'R.'J.-Duck, bringing to the ttention of the Board,his department's need for three new shut - off nozzles. he Board approved the purchase and directed the Clerk to proceed accordingly. OLICE DEPARTMENT: Next appeared before the Board Patrolman Erwin F. Kowalski, and his attorney, Arthur A. May, in compliance with notice served on this police officer to appear, for the purpose of answering to the charge of violation of regulations; specifically Rule No. 12. Attorney Arthur A. May requested a bill of particulars, setting forth etails of the violation, on the grounds that specific charges must be laced on record, and in writing and further requesting that notice be ancelled and set aside. The request that notice be cancelled and set aside was refused by he Board and request for a bill of particulars was granted, said bill of articulars to be furnished to the attorney for Patrolman Kowalski within ne week. Chief of Police, Richard J'. Gillen, being present, brought to the oardts attention his department's need for one police servi -car motor - ycle. Funds being available and having been appropriated for the pur- hase of a new three -wheel motorcycle, the Board authorized the Clerk to roceed with the required advertising for bids. Upon the recommendation of Chief of Police, R. J. Gillen, the oard next appointed Arthur T. Fisher, employee or the American District elegraph Co., Inc. to be a Special Police Officer in and for the City f South Bend. Upon the recommendation of Chief of Police, the Board then appointed Evelyn C. Heinzman as a member of the Police Auxiliary School Patrol for ssignment to the McKinley School district. The Police Department application of Russell D. Ryker, Jr. was examined and ordered placed on file. The Board again examined the bid of'Scherman- Schaus- Freeman Company dated September 26, 1955, to supply eight 1955 Studebaker Champion Deluxe four-door sedans for the Police Department, and deferred action to the next r gular meeting of the Board. TRICAL DEPARTMENT: The Board -approved the recommendation of Supt. Ira Hunsberger for the i stallation of a 4000 lumen light at the southeast Corner of Springbrook a d Hillsdale Road, at the alley intersection on the east side of Allen S ree -t midway between California Avenue and Van Buren Street, and at the n rtheast corner of Dover Drive and Woldhaven "Drive. Petition for lighting of dead end alley between Carroll and St., Joseph Streets, at intersection with east and west.alley between Dubail.and Dayton, was denied, inspection clearly indicating such lighting to be unnecessary. Petitions call 0 the installation of street lights at the following lochtions were examined and referred to Supt. Ira Hunsberger for investi- gation and report: Intersection of Indiana Avenue and Marine Street Intersection of Evergreen-Lane and Sample Street Intersection of Evergreen Lane and Meadow Lane Intersection of Canterbury Street and Sussex Street Eunice Drive from Club Drive to Colfax Avenue. The Board next discussed-and authorized-an allowance of six dollars ($6.00) per day for meals, in lieu of receipts, to apply to members of the Police and Fire Departments when attending schools away from home, either as students or instructors. WEIGHTS & MEASURES: The Board, next examined . A statement of property damage, together with two quotations from local automobile repair shops, pertaining to accident involving the city owned vehicle,operated by the Inspector of Weights and Measures, and the private owned automobile of E. B. Woodford. These papers were referred .to .the office of the City Controller with a view to possible settlement through insurance covering this type of accident.. There being no further business to come before the Board., the meeting was adjourned at 11:20 A. M.
