June 29, 1955
A special meeting of the Board of - Public Safety was held in the office
of the Board at 9:00 A. M. C.S.T., Wednesday, June 29, 1955. Mr. J. A.
Bickel was absent.
The Board reviewed the applications of the following Fire Department
applicants:
Lowell E. Badman
Richard E. Benninghoff
Gerald A. Kazmierczak
Raymond L. Kowalski
Donald E. Whitacre
Bernard R. Zmyslo
Fire Chief, R. J. Duck, being present, and no objections being offered
the Board appointed these six applicants as probationary fireman, effective
July 1, 1955, subject to physical examinations by.the City Doctor, and
by the-doctor for the Firements Pension Fund, proving satisfactory.
There being no other business to come before the Board at this time,
meeting, thereupon adjourned.

A regular meeting of the Board of Public Safety was held Tuesday,
July 5, 1955, at 10:00 A. M. Mr. J. A. Bickel was absent. Minutes of
the previous regular meeting and also special meeting were read and
approved. Salary claims in.the amount of 081,558.95 were approved.-,.Claims
of the following suppliers, in the total amount of $2670.53, were approved
and ordered paid:

First appeared before the Board Assistant Chief A. A. Vargyas, and
brought to the Board's attention the Fire Department's need for 500 ft
of 1N" Fabric Fire Hose. Approval was given and the -Clerk was directed
to proceed with the purchase.

Authorization was also granted by the Board for the release of
Purchase Order BW 8015, covering 250 feet of Booster Hose, of which the
department is in urgent need.
The Fire Department application of Ralph S. Rakowski, dated June 21,
1955, was examined and ordered filed.
POLICE DEPARTMENT:
Chief of Police, R. J. Gillen,,being present, recommended to the
Board the granting of leave of absence to Captain Clem Hazinski and

nd Patrolman Paul L. Locsi to attend summer training at Camp Le Jeune for
he period of July 24th to August 7th, Marine Corps Reserve. Leave was
ranted by the Board accordingly.
Upon the recommendation of Chief Gille4,leave of absence was granted to
Patrolman F. J. Chrapliwy to attend summer training at Camp Grayling, for
he period of July 10th to July 24th inclusive, as a member of the 293rd
National Guard Unit.
The Board next appointed Raymond C. Ashbaugh as a special police
fficer in and for the City of South Bend, while in the employ of the
endix Aviation Corporation.
The Police Department application of Edward.Van Hulle was examined and
rdered placed on file.
Chief Gillen placed before the Board a winter cap for motorcycle and
ra.ffic duty, recommending its adoption and mentioning the fact that there
ere some instances of frost - bitten ears this past winter. The Chief
lso mentioned this capts adoption as uniform winter cap of the Indiana
tate Police and called attention to its comparatively low cost. Action-
as deferred by the Board.
LECTRICAL DEPARTMENT:
The Board considered and decided upon the continuance in service
of three 1000 lumen lights and nine 4000 lumen lights in the Broadmoor
and Beacon Heights Additions, and the Clerk was directed to so inform the
ndiana & Michigan, Electric Company accordingly.
A petition, dated June 23, 1955, calling for improved lighting on
Dundee Street, between Jefferson and Washington, was examined and.referred
to Supt. Ira Hunsberger for investigation and report.
It now being 10 :00 A. M. C.S.T. the advertised time for the opening
f bids, announcement was so made and the Board proceeded with the following

This bid was not accompanied by certified check or bidders bond, due
-.o faulty advertising, and thru no failure on the part of the Edward G.
Moody & Son, Inc.
Inasmuch as bid was for the purpose of supplying a specific tyn
est Ideasure device, and the description meeting with the satisfaction
f the Inspector of Weights and Measures, the Board after examination
f the Statutes governing, and in view of the fact no other bids were
eceived to supply such equipment, authorized its purchase.
Inspectorts Report, Division of Weights & Measures, for the month
June, was examined and ordered filed.
There being no further business to come before the Board, the
Zeeting was adjourned at 11:20 A. M.
