A regular meeting of the Board of Public Safety was held Monday,
June 13, 1955, at 10:00 A. M. All members were present. Minutes of
the previous meeting were read and approved. Claims of the following
suppliers, in the total amount of $10,470.42, were approved and ordered
paid:

WEIGHTS & MEASURES:
First appeared before the Board, Bert S. Cichowicz, City Sealer, and
brought to the Board's attention his need for a 100 - gallon portable test
measure to check and - certify the accuracy of the fuel oil metering equip-
ment of the delivery trucks of fuel oil vendors. Inasmuch as this need
was anticipated and funds appropriated for this purpose, the Board
directed the Clerk to proceed with the necessary advertising to obtain
bids for the.' supplying of this equipment.
Inspector's Prosecution Report, dated June 1, 1955, was examined and
ordered filed.
Copy of Division of Weights and Measures Report, submitted by
Inspector Cichowicz for the month of May, was examined and ordered filed.
POLICE DEPARTMENT:
Chief of Police, R. J. Gillen, being present, placed before the Board,
the resignation, by reason of having attained the required years of service
for retirement, of Detective Sergeant, Lewis C. Rourke.

for the period of June 16th to 30th inclusive, whereby actual severance
from the Police Department is effective July 1, 1955•

receiver units was brought to the Board attention.

The Police Department application of Jos. J. Radecki was received
and ordered placed on file.
Upon the recommendation of Chief of Police, R. J. Gillen, the Board
appointed the following to be Special Police in and for the City of South
Bend and Bendix Aviation Company:

FIRE DEPARTMENT:
Fire Chief, R. J. Duck, being present, recommended to the Board
the advancement in rank of Capt. Robert Smith to that of Battalion
Chief with the title of Instructor, replacing Instructor Russell
Hoffman. The Board approved the recommendation and ordered the
advance in rank to be made effective June 16, 1955.
The Fire Chief then recommended to the Board the .f.illing of two
vacancies in the department by the appointment of Franx G. Koloszar,Jr.
and Marshall Earl Brodbeck as Firemen, effective June 16, 1955, subject
to.the usual six months probationary period. There being no objections,
the Board unanimously approved the appointments and it was so ordered.
The Fire Departmentts need for ten steel beds and bed springs
for the equipment of Fire Station No. 15, and the recommendation that
these be of the same style and grade as supplied for Fire Station N014
was next considered by the Board and the Clerk was authorized to.pro-
ceed,accordingly, with the purchase of this needed equipment.
ELECTRICAL DEPARTMENT:
Supt. Ira Hunsbergerts recommendation for the installing of a
2500 lumen light at the alley intersection with Walnut Street, at
Thomas Street dead -end, was approved by the Board.
Petitions bearing dates of June 3rd and June 4th, calling for
street lighting on Teri Street, between Fellows and Addison, and on
Addison Street, between Jennings and Klinger, were examined and
referred to Supt. Ira Hunsberger for investigation and report.
The Electrical Departmentts need for 5,000 feet of No. 16 wire
was next considered and a satisfactory quotation having been received
on this quantity, the Board directed the Clerk to proceed with the
purchase.
There being no further business to come before the Board, the
meeting was adjourned at 11:40 A. M.
