SPECIAL METING
A Special Meeting of the Board of Public 'Safety was held in the
o.f '3;cr4 of the Board at 2:30 P.M. Thursday, March 31, 1955, for the
p u:bpose of considering the re- appointment of Albert Voorde to the
Police Department. All members were present.
This officer, having recovered from the ill health, for which
he had been granted six months leave of absence, as of June 1, 19S4,
and being eligible for the vacancy created through the retirement of
Officer Doyal V. Rhymer, was recommended by Chief of Police, R. J.
Gillen, for re- appointment. Physicianst reports showing Mr. Voorde
fit for duty, the Board approved his re- appointment to be effective
Friday, April 1, 1955.
There being no other business to come before the Board at this
time, meeting was adjourned at 2:45 P.M.

A regular meeting of the Board of Public Safety was held Monday
April 4, 1955, at 10:00 A. M. Mr. J. A. Bickel was absent. Minutes of
the previous meeting were read and approved. Salary claims, in the
total amount of $82;359.13, were approved. Claims of the following suppliers,
in the total amount of $2113.66, were approved and ordered paid:

FIRE DEPARTMENT;
It was the consensus of opinion of the Board that decision in the
matter of awarding contract for pumper should be held in abeyance at this
time.
The Fire Department application of Allen E. Yeager was examined and
ordered placed on file.
POLICE DEPARTMENT;
Chief of Police, R. J. Gillen, was present and brought to the Board's
attention his department's need for an ambulette in replacement of the
ambulette which has now been in service fourteen months and shows mileage
in excess of 46,000. The Board conceded this need and directed the Clerk
to proceed with the required advertising for bids.
Chief of Police Gillen, together with Fire Chief, R. J. ?duck,
suggested to the Board the transfer of the Police Department ambulance to
the Fire Department, inasmuch as this piece of equipment is rarely used,

and the Police Department urgently needs the storage space occupied by
this vehicle. Discussion was given to the matter of the Fire Department
maintaining the ambulance in operating condition at all times, and
manning this equipment for an emergency call. The matter received.
serious consideration, but no definite action was taken at this time.
The Police Department request for Press Passes for Special Police
Officer (Bendix employed) and Emery L. Molnar, photographer, was
approved by the Board and passes issued this date.
ELECTRICAL DEPARTMENT:
The recommendation of Supt. Ira Hunsb'erger for the installation
of three 6000 lumen lights on Michigan Street at St. Joseph High School,
two 6000 lumen lights on Angella Boulevard at St. Joseph High School,
and one 6000 lumen light on the northeast corner of West Sample Street
and Mayflower Road was approved by the Board.
Supt. Hunsberger recommendation for the installation of a 4000
lumen light on the southeast corner of Donmoyer Avenue and South St.
Joseph Street, was approved by the Board.
A petition, dated March 20, 1955, complaining of insufficient
lighting in the 1000 block of Napier Street was examined and referred
to Supt. Hunsberger for investigation and report.
Counneilman W. A. Hahn appeared before the Board and called
attention to the violation of City Ordinance prohibiting the display of
fruits and vegetables on the public sidewalk, citing two or more locations
where violation is flagrant. The Board directed the Clerk to give nott!4-
fication to the Chief of Police, with the request that a Police check
of such violation be made, and warning served upon the violators.
The report of the Inspector of Weights and Measures for the month
of March was received, examined and ordered filed.
There being no further.bubiness to come before the Board, the
meeting was adjourned at 11;30 A. M.
