A regular meeting of the Board of Public Safety was held Monday,
larch 28, 1955, at 10 :00 A. M. All members were present. Minutes of the

Chief of Police, Richard J. Gillen, being present, informed the Board
f Officer Doyle V. Rhymer's eligibility for retirement as of March 26, 1955,
nd the Officerts request that his retirement be made effective accordingly.

IRE DEPARTMENT:
Hearing was next held in the matter of Fireman Robert J. Shultz, Jr.,
ho appeared before the Board and acknowledged having committed violation
f rules in not less than three instances, as set forth in charges filed
gainst him. After further consideration, it was the unanimous decision
f the Board that his suspension be confirmed from the date it was so
rdered by Fire Chief Duck, and that Fireman Shultz be discharged from
he department, effective Monday, March 28, 1955.
TRICAL DEPARTMENT:
Supt. Ira Hunsberger, being present, discussion first centered upon the
utside lighting needs for the new St. Joseph High School. There being
ome question as to the possible need for dedication of property to the
ity to provide accessibility to such lighting facilities, it was decided
o hold the matter in abeyance until a thorough investigation of the status
f the area has been made, in order to determine the exact steps to be
aken to proceed with the supplying of the required lighting.
Supt. Hunsberger's recommendation for the installation of eight street
ghts in McKinley Terrace, was approved by the Board for the following
tersections:
Pyle Avenue and Anzio Avenue
Rockne Drive and Anzio Avenue
Rexford Drive and Brummitt Lane
Rexford Drive and Beutter Lane
Rexford Drive and Browne Lane
Rexford Drive and Manchester Drive
Kent Lane and Manchester Drive
Kent Lane and Whitehall Drive.
The recommendation of Supt. Hunsberger for the installation of two
)00 lumen lights on West Ewing Avenue for the purpose of lighting that
sction between Grant Street and Prairie Avenue, was approved by the Board,
,nd also installation of a 4000 lumen light on the northeast corner of
_nut and Donald Streets.
The Electrical Department's need for a quantity of Joslyn supplies
approved by the Board.
The Chairman of the Board then announced the time for the opening of
bids to provide a new pumper for the Fire Department, and proceeded in
s matter, as follows:

resulted in the immediate rejection of this bid.
The bids of Seagrave Corporation and the Midwest Fire & Safety
Equipment Company were taken under advisement, successful bidder to
be announced at the next regular meeting of the Board.
POLICE DEPARTMENT;
The Board then proceeded with the opening of bid received to
provide six four -door sedans for the Police Department.
SCHERMAN= SCHAUS- FREEMAN CO. A non - collusion affidavit
LAFAYETTE & SOUTH STREETS and certified check for
SOUTH BEND, INDIANA $738.00 accompanied the bid.

4 -Door Sedans equipped as per
proposal .... ......................$7374.00.
The above bid being the only bid received to provide the required
four -door sedans, and being found to be in order and 'satisfactory to the
department, was accepted by the Board, and the Clerk was directed to
proceed with the purchase.
A petition, dated March 25, 1955, calling for a street light at
the intersection of Ford Street and Scenic Drive, was examined and
referred to Supt. Hunsberger for investigation and report.
Supt. Hunsbergerts recommendation for the installation of a 4000
lumen light on Dubail Avenue, between Kemble and Catalpa Streets, for
the purpose of lighting the Oliver School playground, was approved by
the Board.
The Fire Department app3,ications of Richard L. Dierickx and Clarence
F. Hajducki, were examined and ordered filed.
There being no further business to come before the Board, the
meeting was adjourned at 11;45 A. M.
