Public Safety was held Monday,
March 21, 1955, at 10:00 A.

members were present. Minutes

and approved. Salary claims in the amount of

EIRE DEPARTMENT:
Fire Chief, R. J. Duck, being present, brought to the Boards attention
this date having been set for hearing in the matter of Fireman - Robert Shultz,
suspension. Fireman Shultz failed to appear in response to directive from
he Board that he appear at this time, and the Board ordered that formal
barges be served upon him and hearing set for March 28, 1955 at 9:00 A. M.
.S.T.
The Fire Chief then recommended to the Board, promotion of Lieutenant
Earl Null of Engine Company No. 9, to the rank of Captain, in replacement
of Captain John Adamski, retired, and his assignment to Engine Company No. 12.
he Board approved the promotion to be effective April 1, 1955•
LECTRICAL DEPARTMENT:
Next appeared before the Board S. C. Morse, District Supervisor,
lectrical Maintenance, New York Central Railroad. Mr. Morse first read the
rdinance governing the railroad's responsibilities relative to providing
he necessary lighting for railroad crossings within municipal boundaries.
iscussion was then given to share of expense for the 4000 lumen lights to
e placed at the Sibley Street and Florence Avenue crossings. The Board
hen adopted the following resolution:
RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF PUBLIC WORKS AND SAFETY OF THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND,
INDIANA, THAT A STREET LIGHT BE INSTALLED at each of the intersections of
Sibley Street and Florence Avenue with the New York Central Railroad branch,
each of these two lights to be 4000 lumen. The total cost for these lights
will be two dollars and sixty cents ($2.60) per light permmonth. The Board
Of Public Works and Safety, on behalf of the City of South Bend, agrees to
pay seventy cents (9.70) per month per light, and we ask that the New York
Central Railroad Company pay one dollar and ninety cents ($1.90) per month
par light.
Superintendent Hunsberger being present, the Board directed that he
proceed to make a survey of the McKinley Terrace Addition with a view to
d termining such critical points in the area as require the installation
Of street lights at this time.
The recommendation of Supt. Hunsberger that a 4000 lumen light be
stalled on the southwest corner of Lawton and Olive Streets, was approved
the Board.

A petition, dated March 17, 1955, calling for improved street lighting
at the intersection of South Walnut and Donald Streets, was examined and
referred to Superintendent Hunsberger for investigation and report.
A petition, dated March 12, 1955, signed by the Principal of Oliver
School and members of the P.T.A., suggesting the installation of a street
light to light the Oliver School playground, was examined and referred to
Supt. Hunsberger for investigation and report.
City Attorney, I. A. Hurwich, being present, examined agreements to
provide fire protection to the outlying.area of Portage Township, and to
German Township, and finding said agreements to be in order, so advised
the Board. The Board proceeded with the signing of the agreements.
The Fire Department application of .Anthony Romeo was examined'
".and
ordered filed.
POLICE DEPARTMENT:
The Police Department applications of J. Allen Guy and Robert R. Henry
were examined and ordered placed on file.
The Police Departmentts Report for the month of February, 1955 was
examined and ordered filed.
There being no further business to come before the Board, the meeting
was adjourned at 12 :20 P.M.
