All members were present. Minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved. Kowalski was examined and ordered filed. POLICE DEPARTMENT: The Board appointed Verner L. Lane to be a special police officer in and for the City of South Bend, upon the recommendation of Chief of Police, Richard J. Gillen. Chief of Police, R. J. Gillen, being present, took up with the Board certain problems pertaining to his departmentts responsibility with refer- ence to injuries sustained by members of the Police Auxiliary School Patrol. Also, Chief Gillen, requested advice as to the status of indigents and /or "Welfare clients" in the matter of medical costs arising in connection with such persons while in the custody of the police. The decision of the Board in these matters was held in abeyance. The Police Department application of Robert H. Robinson was examined and order filed.
