A regular meeting of the Board of Public Safety was held Monday,
January 10, 1955, at 10 :00 A.M. Minutes of the previous meeting were read
and approved. Claims of the following suppliers, in the total amount of
$4997.04, were approved and ordered paid:

The Board first gave consideration to the emergency requirement of
the Fire Department for a.replacement motor, and authorized release of
Purchase Order BW6642 for its purchase.
Fire Chief, R. J. Duck, being present, next called attention to
his department's need for ten one and one -half inch selective stream
nozzles, and in view of a substantial trade -in offer involved and the
need for the equipment, the Board directed the Clerk to proceed with
the purchase of these nozzles.
Fire Chief Duck next turned in the report of Captain Harold Zyski,
dated December 29, 1954, concerning accident at the intersection of
South Walnut and West Thomas Streets, which occurred at 11 :04 A.M. CSI'.
that date and involved the 1950 Maxim pumper of Engine Company No. 22.
James T. Stewart, 7254 Jeffery Blvd., Chicago, Illinois, driving a 1954
Chevrolet, was at fault, in accordance with Police Report of the accident
and the Boa�id directed that Mr. Stewart be notified of the cost for
replacement of left rear fender on this piece of equipment is $100.00.
Fire Department Injuries Report, for the month of December, 1954, was
examined and ordered filed.
POLICE DEPARTMENT:
Chief of Police, R. J. Gillen, being present, introduced to the
Board, Sergeant Raymond Maxson, attired in the proposed new short sleeved
summer shirt of 100% orlon material for adoption as regulation summer
wear. Chief Gillen informed the Board, that this shirt is similar in
style to that worn by the police of many cities throughout the United
States and Canada. The Board officially approved the garment, stipulating,
however, that T -shirt or "skivvy" is NOT to be worn with this shirt, the
regulation to be that undershirt is not to be exposed.
Chief Gillen then recommended to the Board, the appointment of Roy
A. Lake, employee of the Jontz Mfg. Co. and Ralph Lewis Stump, employee
of Bendix Aviation Corporation, as special police officers in and for
the City of South Bend, Appointments were, thereupon, made official
by the signatures of Board members and the affixing of the Board's seal.
Chief Gillen next placed before the Board, quotations obtained by
he Clerk from four reliable typewriter repair shops for the repair of
wenty -eight city -owned typewriters used by the Police Department. After
xamining the quotations, the Board, complying with the Chief's recommendation
ccepted that of the Royal Typewriter Co., Inc., at $17.50 per machine,
uotation specifying complete overhaul with one year free service.
Attention of the Board was then called by Chief Gillen to excessive
utomotive service charges made by the Water Works for the upkeep of the
olice Department cars. The Board examined recent claim presented
overing such charges, and agreed to obtain a "flat -rate" for repair and
ther mechanical service, such rate to be established by the Board of
ater Commissioners.

The Police Department application of Frank L. Nierzwicki, was examined
and ordered place on f ile.
The Police Auxiliary School Patrol application of Annie Lee Ellis was
examined and ordered filed.
WEIGHTS & MEASURES-:
The Report of� Summary Tests for the month of December X954 was pre-
sented to the Board by Bert S. Cichowicz, Inspector of Weights and
Measures.
ELECTRICAL DEPARTMENT:
Councilman Walter Glass appeared before the Board and presented a
petition for the installation of a street light on 36th Street at the
Grand Trunk Western railroad crossing. The Board referred the petition
to Superintendent Ira Hunsberger for investigation and report.
There being no further business to come before the Board, the
meeting was adjourned at 11:40 A. M.
