<br />A regular meeting of the Board of Public Safety was held Monday, 
<br />January 10, 1955, at 10 :00 A.M. Minutes of the previous meeting were read 
<br />and approved. Claims of the following suppliers, in the total amount of

<br />The Board first gave consideration to the emergency requirement of 
<br />the Fire Department for a.replacement motor, and authorized release of 
<br />Purchase Order BW6642 for its purchase. 
<br />Fire Chief, R. J. Duck, being present, next called attention to 
<br />his department's need for ten one and one -half inch selective stream 
<br />nozzles, and in view of a substantial trade -in offer involved and the 
<br />need for the equipment, the Board directed the Clerk to proceed with 
<br />the purchase of these nozzles. 
<br />Fire Chief Duck next turned in the report of Captain Harold Zyski, 
<br />dated December 29, 1954, concerning accident at the intersection of 
<br />South Walnut and West Thomas Streets, which occurred at 11 :04 A.M. CSI'. 
<br />that date and involved the 1950 Maxim pumper of Engine Company No. 22. 
<br />James T. Stewart, 7254 Jeffery Blvd., Chicago, Illinois, driving a 1954 
<br />Chevrolet, was at fault, in accordance with Police Report of the accident 
<br />and the Boa�id directed that Mr. Stewart be notified of the cost for 
<br />replacement of left rear fender on this piece of equipment is $100.00. 
<br />Fire Department Injuries Report, for the month of December, 1954, was 
<br />examined and ordered filed. 
<br />POLICE DEPARTMENT: 
<br />Chief of Police, R. J. Gillen, being present, introduced to the 
<br />Board, Sergeant Raymond Maxson, attired in the proposed new short sleeved 
<br />summer shirt of 100% orlon material for adoption as regulation summer 
<br />wear. Chief Gillen informed the Board, that this shirt is similar in 
<br />style to that worn by the police of many cities throughout the United 
<br />States and Canada. The Board officially approved the garment, stipulating, 
<br />however, that T -shirt or "skivvy" is NOT to be worn with this shirt, the 
<br />regulation to be that undershirt is not to be exposed. 
<br />Chief Gillen then recommended to the Board, the appointment of Roy 
<br />A. Lake, employee of the Jontz Mfg. Co. and Ralph Lewis Stump, employee 
<br />of Bendix Aviation Corporation, as special police officers in and for 
<br />the City of South Bend, Appointments were, thereupon, made official 
<br />by the signatures of Board members and the affixing of the Board's seal. 
<br />Chief Gillen next placed before the Board, quotations obtained by 
<br />he Clerk from four reliable typewriter repair shops for the repair of 
<br />wenty -eight city -owned typewriters used by the Police Department. After 
<br />xamining the quotations, the Board, complying with the Chief's recommendation 
<br />ccepted that of the Royal Typewriter Co., Inc., at $17.50 per machine, 
<br />uotation specifying complete overhaul with one year free service. 
<br />Attention of the Board was then called by Chief Gillen to excessive 
<br />utomotive service charges made by the Water Works for the upkeep of the 
<br />olice Department cars. The Board examined recent claim presented 
<br />overing such charges, and agreed to obtain a "flat -rate" for repair and 
<br />ther mechanical service, such rate to be established by the Board of 
<br />ater Commissioners.
