POLICE DEPARTMENT
Chief of Police R. J. Gillen, being present, presented the re-
quired papers for the appointment of William H. Cooper as a special
police' officer in and for the City of South Bend, in the employment of
the Bendix Aviation Corporation. The Board approved and signed these
papers,'making this appointment effective thereby.
FIRE DEPARTMENT
Fire Chief R. J. Duck, being present, brought to the attention of
the Board his departmentts need for 500ft. of 2 112 inch hose. The
Board approved the purchase.
The Fire Chief also discussed with the Board the feasibility of
securing a city -owned sewer - cleaning device in view of the repeated
excessive costs for the opening of Fire Station sewers, which work with
this equipment, could be performed by members of the Fire Department at
a substantial saving of municipal funds, in ,the opinion of the Chief. No
decision was reached in the matter.

Rural runs made by Engine companies 11 and.12, under dates of
ptember 25 and 28 respectively, as covered by Captaints and Lieutenants
ily Reports, were examined and ordered filed.
Fire Department Injuries Report covering injuries sustained by Fire
D partment personnel under dates of July 29, August 13, and September
7 14, and 24, was examined and ordered filed.
TRICAL DEPARTMENT
Superintendent Ira Hunsberger, being present, submitted a report on
a lighting survey ordered by Mayor John A. Scott, and made by the super -
i tendent, in company with Councilman Niezgodski. Their findings and
r commendations for improved lighting in the area covered by the report
were accepted and approved by the :Hoard..
Superintendent Hunsbergerts recommendation for the installation of a
00 lumen light at the alley entrance on LaFayette Blvd. between North
ore Drive and Marquette Avenue, was approved by the Board.
A petition by Whitcomb & Keller, Inc., under date of October 4, 1954
for the installation of a street light at a point midway between Greenlawn
Avenue and the light at north entrance to John Adams High School, was
examined and referred to Superintendent Ira Hunsberger for investigation
and report.
There being no further business to come before the Board, the meeting
adjourned at 11;05 A.M.
