A regular meeting of the Board of Public Safety was held Monday,
October 4, 1954, at 10 :00 A. ICI. All members were present. Minutes of
the previous meeting .were read and approved. Salary claims, in the
total amount of $82,266.54, were approved. Claims of the following
suppliers, in the total amount of $1519.26, were approved and ordered
paid:

Chief Richard J. Gillen being present, took up before the Board his
departmentfs need for six new four -door sedans replacing a like number
�f 1951 and 1952 sedans to be traded in. Funds having been appropriated
Cor the purpose of such replacement of equipment, the Board directed the
J'lerk to proceed with the required legal advertising.
With reference to hearing of last monday regarding censuring and
iseiplininm of Officers Leader and Jensen,itis the decision of the
oard that evidence given at the hearing a week ago supported the
omplaint of several young girls that they had been molested by a
umber ofboys and that officers had responded to the appeal of the
irls to protect them and :identify their assailants. The most im-
ressive evidence against the boys was in the form of written admissions
y several of the boys themselves. There was also abundant evidence, that
he efforts of the officers to do their duty had met with oral and
hysical resistance on the part of several boys. The officers and the
olice Department are commended for.their persistence, under unusually
gated circumstances, in doing what they could to put a stop to a highly
:nproper kind of juvenile behavior.
Police Department application of Lawrence Nilson Toothman was
ined and ordered placed on file.
Police Auxiliary School Patrol application of Martha Amilia Mester
as examined and ordered placed on file.
TRICAL DEPARTMENT:
A petition, dated September 28, 1954, for a street light to be
stalled at the corner of-South St. Joseph Street and Dean Street,
s examined and referred to Superintendent Hunsberger for investigation
i report.
Upon the recommendation of Superintendent Hunsberger, the Board
approved the installation of a boulevard light on the northwest corner
f Leer and Irvington Streets, and also a light in the area of the.corner
f Congress, Union and MacArthur Streets.
Yj?. Hunsberger next submitted three quotations for the conversion of
e heating equipment of Old Fire Station Ito. 3 from coal to oil. The
e Board examined the quotations and awarded the contract to Goff Sales
Service Company, 1417 S. Michigan Street for the sum of °285.00 and
rected the Clerk of the Board to issue purchase order authorizing sane.

Fire Department application of Donald Wayne Lawson, 10262 E.
Indiana Avenue was examined and ordered placed on file.
There being; no further business to core before the Board, the
meeting.:-adjourned at 11:50 A. M.

POLICE DEPARTMENT
Chief of Police R. J. Gillen, being present, presented the re-
quired papers for the appointment of William H. Cooper as a special
police' officer in and for the City of South Bend, in the employment of
the Bendix Aviation Corporation. The Board approved and signed these
papers,'making this appointment effective thereby.
FIRE DEPARTMENT
Fire Chief R. J. Duck, being present, brought to the attention of
the Board his departmentts need for 500ft. of 2 112 inch hose. The
Board approved the purchase.
The Fire Chief also discussed with the Board the feasibility of
securing a city -owned sewer - cleaning device in view of the repeated
excessive costs for the opening of Fire Station sewers, which work with
this equipment, could be performed by members of the Fire Department at
a substantial saving of municipal funds, in ,the opinion of the Chief. No
decision was reached in the matter.
