A regular meeting of the Board of Public Works & Safety was held
Monday, September 20, 1954, at 10 :00 A. -M. All members were present.
Minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved. Salary claims
in the total amount of $73,894-41, were approved. Claims of the follow-
ing suppliers, in the total amount of $3193.01, were approved and ordere
paid:

First appeared before the Board, Fire Chief, Richard J. Duck, and
concurred with.the Board in permitting the use of space in each of the
following Fire Stations for a substation registration office, as requirec
by the Board of Registration office of St. Joseph County for the period
of September 30th to October 4th:

The Fire Chief next recommended to the Board the appointment of
John T. Pallo as a City Fireman, effective October 1, 1954, and subject
to the regular probationary period, having satisfactorily passed physic
examinations required.
ELECTRICAL DEPARTMENT:
Superintendent Ira Hunsberger, being present, recommended to the
Board the installation of a 6000 lumen light in the island at Union,
Congress and MacArthur Avenues, and approval was granted.
Superintendent Hunsberger further recommended installing a 4000
lumen light at the northwest corner of alley intersection at 1043 W.
Colfax Avenue and a 4000 lumen light at the southwest corner of Rose
Street and Sherman Avenue. The Board approved both installations.
The Electrical Departmentfs need for a quantity of supplies
totaling approximately $475.00 was then brought to the attention of the
Board. The list and prices were examined and the Clerk was directed to
proceed with the purchase of the required supplies.
POLICE DEPARTMENT:
The Police Department application of Merl A. Batties (incomplete)
was examined and ordered filed.
The application for Police Auxiliary School Patrol of 14able S.
Collins was examined and ordered filed.
The Monthly Report of the Police Department for August was examii
and ordered placed on file.
There being no further business to come before the Board, the mE
meeting was adjourned at 12 :20 noon.

POLICE DEPARTMENT:
First appeared before the Board, Chief of Police, Richard J. Gillen,
a1aking permission for leave to attend Northwestern Universityts Accident
Investigation Course, October 4th thru October 22nd, 1954 for-Officers
Herbert L. Zakrocki and Raymond Thomas Pierson. In view of these Officers
having been awarded a special grant covering costs of Course, at no
additional expense to the City of South Bend, the Board granted permission
for the required leave in each instance.
The Police Department applications of Ralph J. Andreae, Jr. and
Raymond E. Udy, were examined and ordered place on file.
IRE DEPARTMENT:
Fire Chief, Richard J. Duck, being present, placed before the Board
the Fire Department application of Richard C. Taylor. The Board examined
this application, together with the Fire Department application of Peter
R. Ratajczak, and ordered both filed.
There being no further business to come before the Board, the meeting
wss adjourned at 11 :20 A. M. DST.
