A regular meeting of the Board of Public Safety was held Monday,
August 30, 1954 at 10 :00 A.M. All members were present. Minutes of the
previous meeting were read and approved. Claims of the following suppliers,
in the amount of $440..44 were approved and ordered paid:

FIRE DEPARTMENT
Fire Chief Richard J. Duck, being present recommended to the Board the
appointment of applicant Eugene E. Rozwarski to the Fire Department,
effective September 1, 1954, Mr. Rozwarski having successfully passed the
required physical examinations. Appointment was so ordered.
The Fire Chief next presented three (3) quotations from responsible
decorating firms for the exterior painting of Central Fire Station. Quotations
were examined and the Board awarded this work to The Modern Decorating Company
directing the Clerk to issue purchase order encumbering amount of quotation.
Fire Chief Duck brought to the Board's attention the fact that a. sub-
stantial part of the gasoline purchased for the Fire Department is consumed
in the operation of pumps and accordingly, the Cit of South Bend should be
entitled to a rebate of that portion of the four ( ) cents per gallon State
Tax paid for gasoline in line with the Statute governing. The Board directed
that steps be 'taken for the recovery of such portion of the.tax.paid.
The Fire Department application of Alexander M. Santa was examined and
referred to the Director of Personnel.
POLICE DEPARTMENT
Chief of Police Richard J. Gillen was present and discussed with the
Board matters pertaining to the Police Department.
The Police Department application of Robert J. Bella was examined and
Vgferred to the Director of Personnel.
The Police Department Report for the month of July 1954 was examined and
ordered filed.
There being no further business to come before the Board at this time
meeting was adjourned; the time being 11 :30 A.M. DST.
ELECTRICAL DEPARTMENT
The Board authorized release of Purchase Order BW 5606 dated Aug. 24,
for one (1) secondary controller.
