Hurwich was absent. Salary claims in the -total amount of y�81,868.78, were approved. Gillen, being present, recommended_ to the oa.rd, the appointment of Virgil P. Sorge, employee of American District elegraph Co., Inc., as a. special police officer in and for the City of ouch Bend. The Board approved and made this appointment. The Chief next brought to the attention of the Board, the need for isposal of an excessive number of unclaimed - bicyclez.naw occupying valuable torage space. In the absence of the chairman of the Board, action was eferred in this matter. IRE DEPARTMENT: The Board next examined the Fire Department application of John T. allo and ordered application to be placed on file. TRICAL DEPARTMENT: The Board next examined a drawing attached to a letter addressed to he Board, under date of June 18, 1954, in which Supt. Ira Hunsberger recommends the issuing of permit to Indiana Bell Telephone Company to proceed with the proposed underground work, indicated by the drawing, and approved the manhole construction and moving of conduit as proposed. Petitions for improved street lighting in the 1300 block East Altgeld tr_eet and at the intersections of Donald and Oliver Streets and Marshall treet and Holiday Drive, were examined and referred to Supt. Hunsberger or investigation and report. The Board next considered the proper allocating of the maintenance, eating and utility costs for Hose House No. 3, now serving as the Police Department communications center, among the three departments making use of the building to a greater or lesser degree. It was agreed that the Department of Public Works and Safety budget for the year 1955 is to include an increased allowance for heat with which to provide fuel oil required for the heating of Hose House No. 3. The Board directed the C _er', to notify the Northern Indiana, Public Service Company to discontinue gas service to this building, disconnecting and plugging gas pipe at the m iri. Further this of the operating status and necessary budgeting to meet expense connected with this building, was then deferred to the next regular meeting of the Board. The Police Department monthly report, covering May 1954, was examined a d placed on file. There being no further business to come before the Board, the meeting w s adjourned at 11 :20 A. PAR.
