PQLICE DEPARTMENT:
Chief of Police,Richard J. Gillen, was present and some discussion was
given the matter of Police participation in Memorial Day parades. No
definite conclusion was reached in this matter.
The Chief of Police then presented the request of Police Officer,
Al D. Voorde for a six months leave of absence. Office Voorde appeared
b ore the Board and his request was granted with the definite understanding
t_a.t re- assignment to duty after the six months period would be contingent
upon an existing vacancy and his being able to pass satisfactorily the
regulation physical examination at the time vacancy occurs. Chief Gillen
r commended the granting of this leave of absence.
Police Department applications of Frank J. Andert and Richard J. Zurat
w re examined and ordered placed on file.
,LECTRICAL DEPARTMENT:
Superintendent Ira Hunsbergerts recommendation for the installation of
a 4000 lumen light on the northeast corner of Elwood and Goodland Avenues
was approved by the Board.
FIRE DEPARTMENT:
Fire Chief, Richard J. Duck, being present brought to the attention
of the Board, Fireman Robert Schultz failure to comply with the Boardts
orders that he have his accounts with all creditors in a satisfactory
condition by May lst. The Fire Chief stated that numerous phone calls
had been received since that date from dissatisfied creditors on Fireman

Schultz. The Board directed the Fire Chief to bring Fireman Schultz
before the Board at the next regular meeting, Monday, June 7th.
The Fire Protection Agreement between Portage Township and the
City of South Bend, for the year terminating December 31, 1954, and
bearing the signatures of the Township Trustee and two members of the
Advisory Board, was _next examined, approved, and signed by the Board.
Reports covering runs made by Engine Co. 11 into outlying area
on May 3rd and May 20th, were examined and ordered filed.
Report of Engine Company No. 3, a run made into Clay Township
on a false alarm, under date of May 22, was examined and ordered filed.
There being no further business to come before the Board,'the
meeting was adjourned at 11 :05 A. M.

FIRE DEPARTMENT:
Fire Chief, Richard J. Duck, being present, placed with the Board
architects plans and specifications supplied by Maurer & Maurer., covering
an addition to be constructed for Fire Station No. 4. The Board examined
the plans and directed the Clerk to proceed with the required leagl adver-
tising to obtain bids on this construction.
Fire Chief Duck then brought to the Board's attention the case of
Fireman Robert J. Shultz, Jr., stating that in accordance with the Boardts
request he had brought Fireman Shultz for appearance before the Board.
The Board reviewed the Cass, the Fire Chief stating that the same bills
