recommendation that the bid of the Englewood Electrical Supply, Inc.
to supply the Electrical Department with wire and dable, submitted under
date of March 26, 1954, be accepted as-the lowest and best bid, and the
Board, accordingly awarded the contract and directed the Clerk to issue
the required purchase order.
Superintendent Ira Hunsberger's further recommendation, for the
installation of a 4000 lumen light -at each of the following locations,
was approved by the Board:
1301 South Clover Street
Clover Street & Northside Boulevard
at the St. Joseph River.
Petition, bearing twenty -six signatures of residents of the surround-
ing area, calling for the installation of a street light in the alley at
the rear of 1282 South Hill Street, was examined and referred to Supt.
Ira Hunsberger for investigation and report.
POLICE DEPARTMENT:
Chief of Police, Richard J. Gillen, being present, recommended to
the Board, the appointment of the following applicants to the South Bend
Police Department,.all thirteen having successfully passed all of the
qualifying requirements;

petition for the improvement of

lighting on Ironwood Drive,
north
from Bader Avenue. The Board
directed
that the matter be- referred
to
Superintendent Ira Hunsberger
of the.Electrical Department, for investi-
gation and report.

The applications of these applicants having been reviewed by
!Mayor John A. Scott, the Board, thereupon, approved the appointments to
De effective this date, subject to a probationary period of nine months.
Chief Gillen next presented to the Board the required form for the
ppointment of Edward J. Thomas, as a special police officer in and
or the City of South Bend. Upon the recommendation of Chief Gillen, the
oard, thereupon, signed and sealed this appointment.
The Police Department application of John C. Myer, Jr. was examined and
rdered placed on file.
The application of Ruth B. Childress for the Police Auxiliary School
atrol was examined and ordered filed.
IRE DEPARTMENT:
The Board deferred any action in connection with bids opened at
;he previous regular meeting for the supplying of an ambulette type of
otor vehicle for the Fire Department, until the next regular meeting.
The Fire Department applications of Richard V. Breckrus and
harles F. Goetz were examined and ordered placed on file.
Reports of six runs made into outlying area of German and Portage
'ownships during the month of March, involving Engine Companies
os. 11, 12, and 13, were examined and ordered filed.
Police Department monthly report for the month of February, was
xamined and ordered filed.
There being no further business to come before the Board, the
eeting was adjourned at 11:40 A. M.
