FIRE DEPARTMENT:
Fire Chief, Richard J. Duck, being present, first discussed with the
Board difficulty being experienced with the heating unit of Fire Station
No. 5. Estimating the probable cost of repairs needed to place this
unit in satisfactory condition to be approximately $40.00, the Board
directed the Chief to proceed in the matter.
Fire Department applications of the following applicants were
examined and ordered placed on file:

ELECTRICAL DEPARTMENT:
Superintendent Ira Hunsberger, being present, first took up with the
Board, a letter addressedto his department, from McKinley Howel.l,.Supt.
of the LaPorte Sub - District of the Indiana State Highway Commission.
The Board examined the letter and directed Superintendent Hunsberger to
consult with Traffic Engineer, E. H. Miller, in formulating his reply.
Superintendent Hunsberger again brought up his need for a two -way
radio, stressing its value particularly in connection with night calls
The Board then directed the Clerk to obtain two or-more quotations on
this equipment to 'submit at the next regular meeting of the Board.
POLICE DEPARTMENT:
Chief of Police, Richard J. Gillen, being present, placed before
the Board the required forms for the appointment of -special police
officers and recommended for such appointment Ernest G. Streich, self-
employed merchant policeman, and Jordan B. Whitney, an employee of
American District Telegraph Co., Inc. The Board approved both appoint-
ments and affixed their signatures and seal thereto.
Chief Gillen then discussed with the Board, a request placed with
the Chief by Irma Collmer, Executive Director, St. Joseph County Tuber-
culosis League, for the enforcement of an anti - spitting ordinance, and
for permission to place placards pertaining to the league's Anti- Spitting
campaign on downtown lighting poles. Before granting such permission,

or taking any further steps in the matter, it w s the decision of
he Board that investigation should be made of the eds to discover
Nether or not such an ordinance is now in existence, and the Chief was
directed to search the codes and report on his findings.
The Chief next took up with the Board his departmentts need for
"solo" motorcycle, two -way radio equipped, and funds having been
ppropriated for and being available for such equipment replacement, the
oard directed the Clerk to proceed with the required legal advertising.
