pressed with the type of sign illustrated, and recommended by:the Chief
of Police, and will bring the matter to the Mayor for the consideration
of its use at school locations throughout the City.
Mr. F. Hartman of the Studebaker Corporation, next appeared before
the Board, asking permission of the Board to equip the Studebaker Plant
ambulance with ambulance type red lights and siren. This ambulance is
to be used in runs to the v?rious plant buildings and to the.Studebaker
medical center. Permission was accordingly granted by the Board for
such proper equipping of this ambulance.
Petition for two street lights on Gertrude Street, south of
Ewing Avenue, was referred to the Superintendent of the Electrical
Department, Ira Hunsberger,for investigation and report.
It then being 11 :00 o'clock, the meeting was recessed to reconvene
at 1 :30 P. M.
At 1:30 P. M., there being no.further business for the attention
of the Board, meeting was adjourned.

A regular meeting of the Board of Public Safety was held Monday,
October 13, 1953, at 10 :00 A. M. All members were present. Minutes
of the previous meeting were read and approved. Claims of the following
suppliers in the amount of $6266.70 were approved and ordered paid:

First appeared before the Board, Fire Chiefs Richard J. Duck, and
announced having thirteen vacancies in the Fire Department now requir-
ing appointments. The Chief then presented eleven applications and
informed the Board these applicants are physically fit'and have his
recommendation for appointment as probationary firemen, effective
October 15, 1953. The Board examined the applications and question
arose concerning two applicants having passed their 30th birthday anni-
versary,as to whether these men were eligible for appointment. Chapter
31, Acts of 1937, was cited, as was also the recent ruling in this
matter handed down by Indiana Attorney General, Edwin K. Steers, and
the eligibility of these applicants was thereby conceded. The Board
accordingly, approved for appointment, as recommended by Fire Chief,

Fire Chief Duck then brought to the attention of the Board, his depart -
ment's need for an additional No. 600 Foam Nozzle, a Model 6 -L Pro -
portioner and fifty gallons of Foamite Airfoam Liquid. The Clerk was
directed to proceed with the purchase of these supplies.
The Fire Department application of Louis F. Schleiger, Jr. was examined
and ordered placed on file.
POLICE DEPARTMENT:
Chief of Police, Richard J. Gillen, being present, recommended to the
Board the appointment of L. B. Dixon, an employee of The Torrington
Company, as a special police officer in and for the City of South Bend.
Appointment was, thereupon, approved and signed by the Board.
Chief Gillen, then brought to the attention of the Board, the ,olace
ment of applicant, Irene Mary Dobrucki, on the staff of the Police
Auxiliary School Patrol, retroactive to and including September 12, 1953•
The Board approved the appointment.
The Police Department applications of Clement P. Degucz, Frank Loch -
mandy, and George C. Van Goey were examined and ordered placed on file.
Permission was requested for the joint co- operative effort on the
part of the Knights of Columbus and the South Bend Shrine Club to raise
funds for donation in the interests of crippled children by the sale
of balloons on specified downtown street corners, Saturday, October 17th,
1953• Permission was granted by the Board accordingly.
Chief of Police Gillen brought to the attention of the Board, his
department's need for a recording device, to cost approximately $185.00,
The Chief explained the value of this equipment in obtaining confessions
and thereby convictions, and funds being available for additional equip-
ment, the Board authori zed its purchase and directed the Clerk to proceed
to secure the recorder selected by the Chief.
LECTRICAL DEPARTMENT:
The recommendation of Supt. Ira Hunsberger, for the installation of
