A regular meeting of the Board of Public Safety was held Monday,
October 51 1953, at 10:00 A. M. All members were present. Minutes of
the previous meeting were read and approved. Salary claims in the amount
of $75,782.93 were approved. Claims of the following suppliers in the
amount of $1197.48 were approved and ordered paid;

Chief of Police, Richard J. Gillen, being present, discussed with
the Board matters pertaining to his department.
The Police Department application of Floyd J. Chrapliwy was examined
ordered placed on file.
A letter from Attorney J. Clifford Potts, under date of October 2nd,
ddressed to the president of the Board, was then given consideration
nd the Board agreed that in lieu of litigation, it should be possible
o pay the 1952 clothing allowance demand of Larue H. Wert, and effect a
aving thereby. Chief Gillen was directed to consult with the represent -
tives of the State Board of Accounts and proceed accordingly.
IRE DEPARTMENT:
Fire Chief, Richard J. Duck, presented to the Board quotations,
eceived from local furniture dealers,to supply fourteen beds and bed
prings for Fire Station No. 14. The quotation of S. W. Gerber Upholstering
ompany was considered the lowest and best offer and the Clerk was directed
o proceed with the purchase of the needed equipment.
The bids of Scherman- Schaus- Freeman Company to supply a 4 -door sedan for
he Fire Chief were again reviewed, and decision made to purchase the
Commander Deluxe, at the bid price of $2475.09, plus the additional $153.38
o provide power steering. The Clerk was directed to issue formal purchase
order, encumbering funds for payment of this equipment.
Fire Department applications of Roy J. Bradburn and Samuel A. Williams
re examined and ordered filed.
Fire Department Injuries Report for the month of September was ordered
iled.
Reports of runs made to outlying area by Engine Company No. 7 on
ptember 21st and 29th were examined and ordered filed.
A special traffic sign for use in the protection of school children,
:'fered by the Coca Cola distributors, was brought to the attention of the
Board by Chief of Police, R J. Gillen, The Board was favorably im-
pressed with the type of sign illustrated, and recommended by:the Chief
of Police, and will bring the matter to the Mayor for the consideration
of its use at school locations throughout the City.
Mr. F. Hartman of the Studebaker Corporation, next appeared before
the Board, asking permission of the Board to equip the Studebaker Plant
ambulance with ambulance type red lights and siren. This ambulance is
to be used in runs to the v?rious plant buildings and to the.Studebaker
medical center. Permission was accordingly granted by the Board for
such proper equipping of this ambulance.
Petition for two street lights on Gertrude Street, south of
Ewing Avenue, was referred to the Superintendent of the Electrical
Department, Ira Hunsberger,for investigation and report.
It then being 11 :00 o'clock, the meeting was recessed to reconvene
at 1 :30 P. M.
At 1:30 P. M., there being no.further business for the attention
of the Board, meeting was adjourned.

First appeared before the Board, Fire Chiefs Richard J. Duck, and
announced having thirteen vacancies in the Fire Department now requir-
ing appointments. The Chief then presented eleven applications and
informed the Board these applicants are physically fit'and have his
recommendation for appointment as probationary firemen, effective
October 15, 1953. The Board examined the applications and question
arose concerning two applicants having passed their 30th birthday anni-
versary,as to whether these men were eligible for appointment. Chapter
31, Acts of 1937, was cited, as was also the recent ruling in this
matter handed down by Indiana Attorney General, Edwin K. Steers, and
the eligibility of these applicants was thereby conceded. The Board
accordingly, approved for appointment, as recommended by Fire Chief,
