FIRE DEPARTMENT:
The Board first considered the three proposals received from the
I. W. Lower Company, The Modern Decorating Company, and R. J. Wolf, Painting
Contractor, for painting Fire Station No. 7.- These proposals being in
the following amounts respectively; $786.00,4480-00, and $1047,00, the
Board awarded the contract to The Modern Decorating Company for $480.00,
as the lowest and best bid and directed the Clerk to issue purchase order
encumbering funds to cover this work accordingly.
The Fire Department application of Chester R. Salwoski was examined
by the Board and ordered placed on file.
Three - reports of runs made into the outlying area by Engine Companies
12 and 13, under dates of September 5, 9, and 10, were examined and ordered
filed.
This being the time set in the legal advertising for the opening
of bids to provide an 8-cylinder 4 -door sedan, equipped with Federal C -5
siren for the Fire Department, it was so announced and'the only bid
received, that of the Scherman- Schaus- Freeman Company, was opened and
read as follows:

The Bid,^was accompanied by a certified check for $280.00, and non -
ollusi.on affidavit properly executed, was taken under advisement by the
�oard.
POLICE DEPARTMENT: X
Chief.of Police, Richard J. Gillen,,being present, brought to the
attention of the Board, his departmentis need for a station wagon or
deliv r��,,� type sedan, converted into an ambulance type of vehicle. Funds
Navin fggally transferred, and made available for this purpose, the
Board directed the Clerk to proceed with the required advertising.
The Chief then brought to the attention of the Board,'the need
for replacement of the Police Department Studebaker Car No. 45-, damaged
in accident at Prairie Avenue and Sample Street, July 2b, 1953,, and
submitted written details of transaction pending, which, meeting with
the Boardts approval, the chairman directed the Chief to perform the
transfer of ;title and consummate the transaction. The Board directed
the Clerk to proceed with the legal.advertising for the..replacement
vehicle.
The Police Department application of L. S. Batalis was examined by
the Board and ordered placed on file.
Next appeared before the Board, retired Police Lieutenant, Larue H.
Wert, informing the Board of his failure to receive clothing allowance
check for 1952. It was pointed out.to Mr. Wert, by the chairman of the
Board, that claim for such allowance would have had to have been filed
previous to December 31, 1952, and accordingly the Board cannot recognize
a claim, for which funds had not previously been encumbered, involving
any charge against the City incurred in a former year.
The Board next examined a letter from the Prosecuting Attorney,
under date of September 23,,1953, and directed that this be referred to
Chief of Police, Richard J. Gillen.
ELECTRICAL DEPARTMENT:
The recommendation of Superintendent Ira Hunsberger for the instal -
lationof three b000 lumen lights on Gertrude Street, between Fairview
and Ewing Avenue, was approved by the Board.
The recommendation of Superintendent Hunsberger for the installation
of a 4000 lumen light at the intersection of Rosemary Lane and-Edison
Road, and at southeast corner of Meade Street and Kenwood Avenue was
approved by the Board.
The Police Department Report for the month of August was received
and ordered filed.
There being no further business to come before the Board, the
meeting was adjourned at 11 :30 A. M.
