A regular meeting of the Board'of Public Safety was held Monday,
> eptember 21,'1953, at 10:00 A. M. All members were present. Minutes
if the previous meeting were read and approved. Salary claims in the
amount of $75,163.35, were approved. Claims of the following suppliers

Chief of Police, Richard J. Gillen, being present, placed before the
oard, the appointment of L. A. Young, as a special police officer in and
or the City of South Bend, as an employ of Kenneth Hurd, Private Detective.
ppointment was approved and signed by the Board.
An interesting and instructive report was given by the chairman of
he Board, I. A. Hurwich, on the successful operation and results from
he use of the electric speed timing device, obtained by the City of
eno, based on two - hundred arrests. Mr. Hurwich pointed out the necessity
f two officers co-operating in such arrests and bothcfficerst names appear -
ng on police summons.
The legal requirements in the matter of posting of signs indicating
use of this device on highways entering the City, were also brought out in
discussion.
The Police Department application of Leo J. Donovan was examined and
ered placed on file.
The disposition of Police Department Car No. 45, a 1953 Studebaker
Title No. 1612147) damaged in a wreck and considered salable as junk,
as deferred for further consideration.
FIRE DEPARTMENT:
Urgent need for a gas density metering device was discussed and the
Clerk was directed to procure this equipment with the least possible
delay.
The Fire Department application of Robert L. Mitchell, was examined
and ordered placed on file.
ELECTRICAL DEPARTMENT:
The recommendations of Superintendent Ira Hunsberger for the
improvement of street lighting at the intersections of Belmont Avenue
and Greenlawn Avenue, and Greenlawn Avenue and Southwood, were approved
by the Board.
The recommendations of Superintendent Hunsberger for the improve-
ment of street lighting at the intersections of Wall Street and Green -
lawn Avenue, and Hoover Avenue and Greenlawn Avenue, were approved by
the Board.
A petition, dated September 18, 1953, for a street light to be
installed at the intersection of East Edison Road and Rosemary Lane,
was referred to Superintendent Hunsberger for investigation and report.
A petition, dated September 17, 1953, for improved lighting on
Kenwood Avenue, from Kenwood to Kaley; and a light to be installed at
the intersection of Meade and Kenwood, was referred to Superintendent
Hunsberger for investigation and report.
The urgent need for replacement doors at the Fire Alarm and Signal
Station was reported by Superintendent Hunsberger. Funds being available,
and quotations on the required type of doors, submitted by Sumner B.
Shimp, being considered reasonable,-the Clerk was directed to proceed with
this purchase.
Discussion was given to the need of a blower, operated by gaso-
line motor, together with several sections of 6 -inch canvas hose,
by the Electrical Department. The Board suggested; that quotations'
be obtained from three or four sources, and the matter can then be
given proper consideration.
There being no further business to come before the Board, the
meeting adjourned at 12 :00 o'clock noon
