for the last half of the year 1952 has not been received, and the Board
directed the Clerk to inform Trustee Mays that before contract will be
confirmed by the Board, German Township must pay the delinquent 1952
payment due the City of South Bend, plus payment for the first half of
1953, when full fire protection remained in effect pending the signing
of contract, and the records of the Fire .Department show thirteen runs
were made, one fire having involved the use of three pieces of equipment
for a considerable period of time.
Reports covering runs into outlying area, German and Portage Townships
under dates of.August lst, 11th and 12th, involving Engine Cos. ll, 13 and
8 respectively, were examined and ordered filed.
The July 1953 Report of the South Bend Police Department was examined
and ordered filed.
There being no further business to c-ome before the Board, the
meeting was adjourned at 11:15 A. M.

A regular meeting of the Board of Public Safety was held Monday,
August 31,1953, at 10 :00 A. r�. All members were present. Minutes of
the previous regular meeting we3?e read and approved. Claims of the

Bids on fire engines, opened August 3, 1953, were again ordered by
the Board to be held in abeyance for consideration at a later date.
The Board then examined and signed contract for the year 1953, to
provide fire protection for.German Township.
ELECTRICAL DEPARTMENT:
The recommendation of Superintendent Hunsberger for the installation

of a 4000 lumen light at each of the following five locations, met
with the approval of the Board:
Intersection of Pairview Avenue and Gertrude Street
On Gertrude Street, between Fairview and Ewing Avenues
On Walton Street,`between Nos. 21:5 and 221 '
On Burbank Street; between 216 and 222
On Concord Street, between 218 and 222
Upon the recommendation of Superintendent Ira Hunsberger,-the Board
approved the installation of a 2500 lumen light at the intersection of
East Washington and 34t,h Street.
POLICE DEPARTMENT:
The following Police Auxiliary School Patrol applications were
re- examined by the Board:

Agnes H. Brainerd
Maxine. L. Kambol
Upon recommendation and approval of Chief of Police, Richard J.
Gillen,.these applicants were thereupon appointed by the'Board to
be members of the Police Auxiliary School Patrol, effective September 1,
1953•
The Board next approved the return'to active duty in the Police
Department of Patrolman Ervin Plenener, effective September 1, 1953•
This police officer has been on military leave of absence from the
department.
Chief of Police Gillen next brought to the attention of the Board
the crowded condition of the County Jail, which has reached the point
where the Sheriff-will no longer accept custody of felons sentenced
by the City Court, and such prisoners must serve their sentences in
the confines of the City Jail, which is not suitable for this type
of imprisonment, and which will immediately be crowded beyond its
limited capacity. It was suggested that city,prisoners, under extend-
ed sentence, be placed in the'County Jails of adjoining Counties,
upon the negotiation of such an arrangement. It was also suggested
that the Board contact the Board of County Commissioners relative to
the possibility-of the usage of cells in the cell block of the St.
Joseph.County-Infirmary. The.maximum capacity of the City Jail being
ten prisoners, and prisoners at the,preaentt moment numbering four,
the Chairman of the Board brought the discussion to a close with the
suggestion,,'twe will face up to the situation when it confronts us."
Police Officer's Report, dated August 23, 1953 concerning removal
of an indigent from the doorway of Laurel School to the County Infirmary,
was noted and ordered filed.
Police Officers Report, dated August 24.. 1953, concerning accident
involving Squad Car No. 43 and a Brink's Armored Truck, was noted and
ordered filed.
A petition for improved lighting in the 2000 block Kenwood Street,
was referred to Superintendent Ira Hunsberger for investigation and
report.
Pire Department Captains and Lieutenants Daily Reports, dated
August 1.9, 24th and 26th covering runs made to outlying.area, and in-
volving Engine Companies 21, 11, 7, 8, 12 and l3 were examined and
ordered filed.
There being no further business to come before the Board, the meeting
adjourned at 11:45 A. M.
