Runs made into outlying area during the period of July l to-
July 19th inclusive, by Engine Companies Nos. 11, 12 and 13, submitted
on Captain and Lieutenantts Daily Report Forms, were examined and
ordered filed.
There being no further business to come before the Board, the
meeting adjourned at 11 :30 A. M.

A regular meeting of the Board of Public Safety was held Monday,
August 3, 1953 at 11 :00 A. M. All members were present. Minutes of the
previous meeting were read and approved. Claims of the following suppliers,
in the amount of $2480.64, were approved and ordered paid:

POLICE DEPARTYENT:
Chief of Police Richard J. Gillen being present, recommended to the
Board, the appointment of John C. Howard, of the Carson Secret Service,
Indianapolis, and Virgil P. Sorge, employed by the American District
Telegraph Co. Inc., South Bend to be special police officers in and for
the City of South Bend. The Board approved these appointments.
The Chief next asked permission of the Board for his department's
Chief Radio ?Maintenance Ilan to attend the conference of the Associated
Police Communications Officers to be held in Detroit, August 26, 27, and
28th. Permission was granted by the Board.
Discussion next ensued on the topic of the use and value of the
automotic speed detector. The Chief pointed out its special value in
ascertaining speed violations to sustain complaints filed, particularly
on short stretches of street, citing TvlfcKinley Avenue between Eddy and
Sunnyside, and Thomas Street, as examples, where it is impossible to
"pace" speed violators with a squad car.
A petition, dated June 29, 1953, requesting a street light at the
ntersection of 311th Street and East Washington Avenue, was examined and
eferred to the superintendent of the Electrical Department for investi-
ation and report.
Report of run made to Sanitary Land Fill on Douglas Road, by Engine
ompany No. 13, July 20, 1953, signed by Lieut. Steve Flowers, was examined
nd ordered filed.
Fire Department Injuries Report for the month of July was received and
rdered filed.
The June 1953 Report of the Police Department was received and ordered
iled.
There being no further business to come before the Board, the meeting
journed at 11:45 A. TJI.
