A petition, dated May 29, 1953, calling for improved lighting on
Ewing Avenue, at the Douglas, Arnold and Webster Street intersections,
was referred to Superintendent Hunsberger for investigation and report.
FIRE DEPARTMENT:
Fire Chief, Richard J. Duc!k,' being present, called attention to the
urgent need for two Chemox.oxggen breathing apparatus to cost approximately
$160.00 each. The ..Board approved'the_ purchase of this equipment and
directed the Clerk to proceed in.the matter.
Reports of runs made into outlying area of Portage Township, by
Engine Companies Nos. 13 and 8, under. dates of May. 23rd and May 25th respec-
tively, were examined and ordered filed.
The Fire Department,;Injury Report for the month of Dlay was examined
and ordered filed.
There being no.further business to come before -the Board, the
meeting was ,adjourned at 11:45 A. M.

A regular meeting of the Board of Public Safety was held Monday, June 15, 1953,
at 10:00 A. M. Mr. Ziegler was absent. Minutes of the previous meeting were read and
approved. Claims of the following suppliers, in the amount of $11,757.45, were approved
and ordered paid:

FIRE DEPARTMENT:
First appeared before the Board Fire Chief, Richard J. Duck, and took up the.
matter of the lack of contracts-with Portage and German Townships, for the year 1953,
far f'e,ptection afforded by the City Fire Department. The contract to be entered

into with Portage Township was, thereupon, examined and signed by the Board, and
the Clerk was directed to present this contract to the Township Trustee for his
signature and the approval and signatures'of the Township Adv%sony Board.
The matter of contract with German. Township was held in abeyance, inasmuch as it
was brought to the attention of the Board that this township has failed to fulfill
its 'contract for the year 1:952, payment for the last half of the year not having
been received up to the present time.
'The Board examined Police Department Motor Vehicle Accident Report #'63505 cover -
ing'accident of June 14, involving Fire Chiefs car, being driven at the time of the
accident by Richard D. Smith, and the privately owned 1950 Studebaker sedan of
Matthew J. Osowski, 619 N. Birdsell Street. Report shows name of witness; Mrs.'
Leonard Zane, 2818 S. Michigan Street.' Report was signed by Police Officer Pasalich.
Fire Chief Duck explained to the Board his version of the accident. The Board
ordered the report placed on file..
fihe Fire Department application of Wendell Dale Kamp was reviewed by the Board
and "returned to the file.
ELECTRICAL DEPARTMENT:
'Ira L. Hunsberger; Superintendent, being present, reported to the Board, the
re- installing of light at the first alley intersection south of Washington on
Laurel Street, upon the orders of Councilman Niezgodski and. Mayor Scott. The Board
approved the installation.
The requested removal of light pole No. J284 -985 to a point 22'5" south from
its present Location, due to interference with construction under way on the north-
east corner of Ewing Avenue and Miami Street was granted by the Board, the cost to
be paid by Barton Wade, upon presentation of bill for costs involved,
The recommendation of Superintendent Hunsberger for the installation of a
4000 lumen light at the intersections of Douglas, Arnold and Webster Streets with
Ewing Avenue, was approved by the Board.
POLICE DEPARTMENT:
Chief Richard J. Gillen, being present, mentioned the possibility of securing
a used air-conditioning-system for his department at a considerable reduction over
the cost--of new equipment of that type. The matter received brief consideration
and is to be held in abeyance.
The disposition of accumulated stolen bicycles, retained in storage by the
Police Department, was given some discussion. The present arrangement whereby
these bicycles are at intervals turned over to the Mishawaka Orphans Home for
repair and distribution among the children of that institution meets with the
approval of the Board, and no other dispostion is at this time recommended or
authorized by the Board.
There being no further business to come before the Board, the meeting was
adjourned at 11:15 A. M.
