POLICE DEPARTIVENT:
Chief of Police, Richard J. Gillen, being present, brought to the
attention of the Board the annual Convention of Chiefs of Police to be
held in Indianapolis, June 28, 29, 30th and July lst, and asked permission
of the Board to be in attendance. Permission was granted.
Request from a local merchandising firm, to use the sidewalk in front
f their place of business for a display of a variety of appliances,
as rejected, inasmuch as the feature was one of purely commercial aspects
'n the consensus of opinion of the Board.
The appointment of Karl R. Smith as a special police officer for the
ity of South Bend, while in the employ of Carson Secret Service, in
ursuance o� the statutes, was made, and commission pertaining thereto,
my signed by the Board. '
The retirement request of Leo H. Makowski, with the recommendation by
hief Gillen that request be granted, was next considered and approved.
Chief of Police Gillen then brought'to the attention of the Board
letter from Attorney George 11. Beamer, representing the Grand Trunk
ailway, concerning the matter of placing Spencer Street,, which is now
artially on Grand Trunk property, in'a status to permit Police Depart -
ent control 'of traffic on this street.' Attorney Beamerts letter was
eferred to the City Attorney for interpretation and reply.
LECTRICAL DEPARTMENT:
The "turn-out - turn -on" lighting petitions for the alley intersection
with Laurel Street, between Washington 'and Jefferson, was taken up by
he Board with Superintendent Hunsberger, who agreed to seek and carry
out the decision -of Mayor Scott in this matter.
The recommendation of Superintendent, Ira Hunsberggr, for the in-
stallation of a 4000 -lumen light a:t each of the following locations,
as accepted and approved by the Board:'
Southwest corner' of Elmer and Bulla Streets
Northeast corner of Jacobs Street and Roekne Drive
Intersection of Cedar. Street and Rockne Drive
Intersection of Howard Street and Twyckenham Drive
Pole #J236 -444 on Twyckenham Drive.

A petition, dated May 29, 1953, calling for improved lighting on
Ewing Avenue, at the Douglas, Arnold and Webster Street intersections,
was referred to Superintendent Hunsberger for investigation and report.
FIRE DEPARTMENT:
Fire Chief, Richard J. Duc!k,' being present, called attention to the
urgent need for two Chemox.oxggen breathing apparatus to cost approximately
$160.00 each. The ..Board approved'the_ purchase of this equipment and
directed the Clerk to proceed in.the matter.
Reports of runs made into outlying area of Portage Township, by
Engine Companies Nos. 13 and 8, under. dates of May. 23rd and May 25th respec-
tively, were examined and ordered filed.
The Fire Department,;Injury Report for the month of Dlay was examined
and ordered filed.
There being no.further business to come before -the Board, the
meeting was ,adjourned at 11:45 A. M.
