<br />POLICE DEPARTIVENT: 
<br />Chief of Police, Richard J. Gillen, being present, brought to the 
<br />attention of the Board the annual Convention of Chiefs of Police to be 
<br />held in Indianapolis, June 28, 29, 30th and July lst, and asked permission 
<br />of the Board to be in attendance. Permission was granted. 
<br />Request from a local merchandising firm, to use the sidewalk in front 
<br />f their place of business for a display of a variety of appliances, 
<br />as rejected, inasmuch as the feature was one of purely commercial aspects 
<br />'n the consensus of opinion of the Board. 
<br />The appointment of Karl R. Smith as a special police officer for the 
<br />ity of South Bend, while in the employ of Carson Secret Service, in 
<br />ursuance o� the statutes, was made, and commission pertaining thereto, 
<br />my signed by the Board. ' 
<br />The retirement request of Leo H. Makowski, with the recommendation by 
<br />hief Gillen that request be granted, was next considered and approved. 
<br />Chief of Police Gillen then brought'to the attention of the Board 
<br />letter from Attorney George 11. Beamer, representing the Grand Trunk 
<br />ailway, concerning the matter of placing Spencer Street,, which is now 
<br />artially on Grand Trunk property, in'a status to permit Police Depart - 
<br />ent control 'of traffic on this street.' Attorney Beamerts letter was 
<br />eferred to the City Attorney for interpretation and reply. 
<br />LECTRICAL DEPARTMENT: 
<br />The "turn-out - turn -on" lighting petitions for the alley intersection 
<br />with Laurel Street, between Washington 'and Jefferson, was taken up by 
<br />he Board with Superintendent Hunsberger, who agreed to seek and carry 
<br />out the decision -of Mayor Scott in this matter. 
<br />The recommendation of Superintendent, Ira Hunsberggr, for the in- 
<br />stallation of a 4000 -lumen light a:t each of the following locations, 
<br />as accepted and approved by the Board:' 
<br />Southwest corner' of Elmer and Bulla Streets 
<br />Northeast corner of Jacobs Street and Roekne Drive 
<br />Intersection of Cedar. Street and Rockne Drive
