ELECTRICAL DEPARTMENT:
Superintendent 1ra Hunsberger, being present, took up with the
Board the matter of improved street lighting requested by the New York
Central Railroad Company at the railway crossings at Kendall, Chapin
and Catalpa Streets. The matter was discussed briefly, and the Board
directed.Superintendent Hunsberger to proceed to make the installations
necessary to improve lighting conditions at all three locations.
Superintendent Hunsbergerts recommendation for the following
installations was approved by the Board:

A petition for installation of street light at the northwest corner
of Colfax Avenue and Coquillard Drive was examined by the Board and
referred to Superintendent Hunsberger for investigation and report.
The Fire Departmentts injury Report for the month of April was
examined and ordered filed.
There being no further business to come before the Board, the

At the request of Lieut..Paul V. Thomas, on the advice of his
physician, his demotion to the rank of detective sergeant to become
effective as of May 17th, met with the approval of the Board. The
Boardts action in the matter complied with the recommendation of
Chief of Police, Richard. J. Gillen.
The Board next promoted to the rank of Lieutenant, Patrolman
Carl L. Shaffer, on recommendation of Chief Gillen, effective as of
May 17th.
The request of the South Bend Jaycees Association for permission
to sell "Scotchlite'l bumper strips along the curbs in various locations
on arterial-streets throughout the City, was next considered _by the
Board. In view of the standing of this organization, the apparent
safety,value of the device they propose vending, and the fact that the
funds so obtained are to be used for a worthy project, the Board
granted its permission.'
Chief of Police, Richard J. Gillen, being present, brought to the
attention of the Board and presented photographic evidence of the
dumping of garbage and all types of litter and refuse in the 2100
block, East Corby Street. The Board ordered the immediate posting
of the property involved against further dumping of any description
and directed the Chief of Police to proceed with its enforcement.
ELECTRICAL DEPARTMENT:
The recommendation of Superintendent Ira Hunsberger, for the
installation of a 4000 lumen light on the northwest corner of
Coquillard Drive and Colfax Avenue, in line with petition dated May 6th,
was approved by the.Board
A petition, dated May 8th, calling for installation of street
lights on the triangle of Rockne Drive and Jacob and Cedar Streets,
was examined by the Board and referred to Superintendent Hunsberger
for investigation and report.
A petition, under date of May 4th, demanding installation of three
new street lights, at the following intersections, and bearing forty -
two signatures, was next examined by the Board and referred.to Supt.'
Hunsberger for his investigation and report:
Lincolnway West and Sheridan
Lincolnway West and. Knoblock
Lincolnway West and Maplewood
The report of Engine Co. No. 21 covering a run made in German Town-
ship on May 7th, was.examined and ordered filed.
There being no further business to come before the Board, the meeting
was adjourned at 11 :05 A.M.
