A regular meeting of the Board of Public Safety was held Monday,
May 11, 1953 at 10:00 A. M. All members were present. Minutes of the
revious meeting were read and approved. Salary claims in the amount of
75,729.85 were approved. Claims of the following suppliers in the amount
of $13,797.27 were approved and ordered paid:

FIRE DEPARTMENT:
Fire Chief,Richard J. Duck, being present, requested permission of the
Board to paint the outside of Fire Station No. 12. It was pointed out that
the redwood siding should be given a dark stain. This met with the agree-
ment of the Fire Chief, who informed the Board that the building has been
sanded and is ready for application of the stain. Funds being available
for this renovation, the Board granted its approval.
The Chief then took up with the Board the urgency for replacement of
Squad 1 equipment.
Then appeared before the Board, Mr. Frank Kocza.n, President of the Rum
Village Business Ments Association and a delegation of members of the
association, bringing to the attention of the Board the need for a fire
station in the southwest section of the city. It was pointed out that the
city purchased and owns a lot at the intersection of Prairie and Ewing
Avenues as a site for a fire station to serve this section of the city.
Fire Chief, Richard J. Duck, being present mentioned the types of equip-
ment and stations presently responsible for the protection of this area.
The delegation expressed the opinion that considerable hazard exists due
to the area being surrounded by railroad switching tracks, which could
cause serious delay of fire equipment. The fact that the area also
contains two large elementary schools was also mentioned. The Board,
at the Fire Chiefts suggestion, directed that the Fire Underwriterst
office at Chicago be called upon to make a technical survey of the
situation, and the action of the Board will hinge upon the findings and
report of such survey.
Next appeared before the Board,Mrs. Orrill Jones, 734 Wenger Street,
complaining of excessive truck traffic and noise from this traffic at night.
Mrs. Jones stated, that in her opinion, the trucks -are violating speed limits,
in addition to creating unnecessary noise and disturbance at the intersection
of Pennsylvania and High Streets. The Board assured Mrs. Jones the matter
would receive the attention of the Chief of Police, and definite action would
be taken to alleviate the condition immediate)

ELECTRICAL DEPARTMENT:
Superintendent 1ra Hunsberger, being present, took up with the
Board the matter of improved street lighting requested by the New York
Central Railroad Company at the railway crossings at Kendall, Chapin
and Catalpa Streets. The matter was discussed briefly, and the Board
directed.Superintendent Hunsberger to proceed to make the installations
necessary to improve lighting conditions at all three locations.
Superintendent Hunsbergerts recommendation for the following
installations was approved by the Board:

A petition for installation of street light at the northwest corner
of Colfax Avenue and Coquillard Drive was examined by the Board and
referred to Superintendent Hunsberger for investigation and report.
The Fire Departmentts injury Report for the month of April was
examined and ordered filed.
There being no further business to come before the Board, the
