May 4, 1953
A regular meeting of the Board of Public Safety was held Monday,
May 4, 1953, at 10:00 A. M. All members were present. Minutes of the
previous meeting were read and approved. Claims of the following suppliers,
in the amount of 04832.699 were approved and ordered paid:

FIRE DEPARTMENT:
Fire Chief, Richard.J. Duck, being present, placed in the hands of the
chairman of the Board, a letter from the Firemen's Pension Fund, under,
date of April 29, 1953, informing the Board that the application of Glenn
A. Hess has been rejected, due to applicant being over the age limit.
This letter also informs the Board that disability pensions have been
granted by the Firemen's Pension Fund, in line with the recommendations
of the Fundts medical examiner, Dr. R. W. Spenner, and their status as
pensioners is to be effective May 16, 1953, for the following three men:
Fireman George Roessler
Fireman Edward Niezgodski
Fire Alarm Operator James McKnight.
The retirement of these men was accordingly approved and ordered by
the Board.
The Fire Chief then, brought to the attention of the Board, the
departmentts need for a..pare radio sending and .receiving set. The Clerk
was directed to purchase the required equipment...
The Fire Department application of Richard V. Strychalski was
examined by the Board and ordered placed on file.
Reports from Engine Companies Nos. 11, 12, and 21, covering runs
beyond the city limits during the month of April, were examined and ordered
filed.

POLICE DEPARTMENT:
Chief of Police, Richard J. Gillen, being present, the chairman of
the Board immediately took up with the Chief the matter of enforcement
of load limits in connection with the excessive truck traffic on,West
Indiana Avenue, between Prairie Avenue and Olive Street. This situation
was brought to the attention of the Board through motion made by Council -
man,Korpal in the meeting of the Common Council, Monday, April 27, 19531
duly seconded and carried,to refer to the Board,a petition from West
Indiana Avenue home owners calling for such enforcement. The matter was
given some discussion and the Chief of Police agreed to put on duty a
motorcycle patrolman in.this particular section of the city, with.a view
to control of this traffic to a degree that will minimize the complaints
of the petitioners.
Chief Gillen next presented the Police Department application of
Louis W.,Kaufman, a former City of South Bend police officer and recommended
his appointment to the Police Department to become effective May 5, 1953•'.
This application, having the further recommendation of Mayor John A. Scott,
and applicant having successfully passed the,physical examination, the
Board approved the appointment accordingly.
The Police Department applications of Robert A. Buzolich, 2ygmunt C.
Podlas, and G. L. Weis were examined by the Board and ordered placed on
file.
The application for Police Auxiliary School Patrol,of Edna Mae
Marshail.was examined by the Board and ordered placed on file.
A petition for a street light on South Chicago Street, between Ford
and Huron Streets, was examined by the Board and referred to ira Hunsberger,
Superintendent of the Electrical Department for investigation and report..
A petition calling for the installation of two street lights on
Warren Street, one at the alley intersection north of Prairie Avenue, and
one at the intersection of.Warren and ,Delaware Streets, was examined by
the Board and referred to Superintendent Hunsberger for investigation
and report.
There being no further business to come before the Board, the
meeting was adjourned at 11:45 A. M.
