A regular meeting of the Board of Public Safety was held April 27,
1953 at 10 :00 A. M. All members were present. Minutes of the previous
meeting were read and approved. Claims of the following suppliers, in
the total amount of $7980.63, were approved and ordered paid:

FIRE DEPARTMENT:
In the absence of Fire Chief Richard J. Duck, Asstt. Chief A. 0.
Brown appeared before the Board and reported the attendance of Asstt.
Chiefs Cecil McHenry and Andrew Vargyas at the arson school, Monday
through Friday of this week, which is being held at Purdue University;
authority for their attendance having been granted by Chief Duck.
ELECTRICAL DEPARTMENT:
The installation of 4000 lumen lights, at the following locations,
in accordance with the recommendations of Superintendent Ira Hunsberger,
received the approval of the Board:
Northeast corner of Miami Street and Byron Drive
Intersection of Byron Drive and Brookton Drive
Byron Drive, between Nos. 1153 and 1201
Alley intersection between Western Avenue and
Napier Street and
Chapin and Pine Streets.
Superintendent Ira Hunsberger, being present, asked permission from
the Board to attend the annual meeting of the I.M.S.A., to be held Thursday,
Friday and Saturday of this week at Grand Rapids, Michigan. Permission
was granted.
POLICE DEPARTMENT:
Chief of Police, Richard J. Gillen, being present, first reported
to the Board, the repeated violation of the City Ordinance against the
usurpation of the sidewalk by business establishments, citing a particular
instance where continued warning has effected no results. The chairman
of the Board directed the Chief to call upon Attorney George Crane, with
the request that a letter setting a definite deadline be sent the offender,
and upon reaching the deadline to proceed to issue warrant for arrest.
Chief Gillen next reported on the petition for an Auxiliary Police
woman, referred by the Board to Traffic Engineer, E. H. Miller, at the
previous regular meeting. The Chief informed the Board that investigation
reveals not to exceed eleven school children crossing at the intersection
of Portage, California, Cottage Grove and DeMaude Avenue. He pointed out

t no auxiliary police woman is available and the extremely limited
ber of school children crossing at this intersection, which is fully
tected with crossing signals, would not justify any change of assign-
t of present personnel.
.The Board next appointed Norman Dale Damp, Sr., employee-of the
merican District Telegraph Company and Billy E. Slaybaugh, employee of
he James Shields Detective Agency, to be special police officers in and
or the City of South Bend, in accord,with the recommendations of Chief
f.Police, Richard-J. Gillen.
Chief Gillen presented to the Board a request for leave of absence
bmitted by Temporary Police Off icer.Harry Koss, to become.effective
Y 1, 1953, for the period of May 1st to September.. lst.. Chief Gillen
commended the granting of this leave and the reappointment of Officer
ss, September 1., 1953, in the. same _temporary status, in the event the
gular member of the Department for whom Officer Koss has served as
placement, has,not.returned to duty at that time. Leave was granted by
.e Board accordingly.
The application of Erma Caldwell for Police Auxiliary School Patrol
ervice was examined by the Board and ordered placed on file.
Radio Expenditures Report for the month of March, compiled by the
lice Department, was examined and ordered filed.
The regular monthly report of the Police Department for the month
March was received and ordered placed on -file.
There being no further business to,come before the Board, the
