A regular meeting of the Board of
Public Safety was held April 6,
1953 at 10:00 A. M. All members were present. Minutes of the previous
meeting were read and approved. Claims

POLICE DEPARTMENT:
Chief of Police, Richard J.
Gillen, being present, asked permission of
the Board for the attendance of
the Police Pistol Team. for one day,
Sunday,
April 12th, at the State Pistol
Championship matches being held that date.
Permission was granted by the Board.
Chief Gillen next presented
application of Ernest G. Streich for
appointment as a special police
officer
in the employ of the American
3istrict Telegraph Company and
upon the
Chefts recommendation, appointment
was so made.
Surety Bond in the amount of
$1,000.00 binding Casimer P. Kubiak,
Plant
suard for the Bell Telephone Company, was next examined and approved by
the Board.
IRE' DEPARTMENT:
The Claim of Harry H. Verkler, General Cbntractor, in the amount of
2278.00, subinitted,.a.djudged correct, and certified,for payment by Forrest
11. West, was examined by the Board and referred to Fire Chief Richard J.
uck'for his examination and signature..
The Fire Department application of J. Robert Osborn was examined and
ered placed on file.
Reports of runs made to outlying township areas by Engine Companies,
s.'2, 10, 112 12 and 21 were examined and ordered filed.
ELECTRICAL DEPARTMENT:
Ira Hunsberger, Superintendent, being present, recommended to the
Board, the installation of a 2500 lumen light at 212 North Elm Street,
near the entrance to the City Cemetery. Recommendation was approved.
Petitions for improved lighting at the following locations, were
examined by the Board and referred to Superintendent Hunsberger for
investigation and report:
Lawrence Street at the alley between Howard Street and
Corby Boulevard
Studebaker Street between Liston Street and Washington
Avenue .
East and west alley in the 1000 block west Colfax Avenue
between, Colfax and LaSalle Avenue
Alley in the 300 block South Chapin Street, extending
from Chapin to Pine Street.
The Board next examined report of insubordination on the part of
Police Officer Thomas B. Grant, and -asked the Chief of Police to bring
the suspended officer before the Board. Officer Grant and Sgt. Robert
L. Seals, representing the Police Pension Board, then appeared before
the Board. Officer Grant acknowledged receiving letter stating the
charges lodged against him. When asked by the chairman of the Board
if he realized he had violated Rule -8, Officer Grant replied that he
would prefer to request a hearing for a later date. Agreement was
reached to hold such hearing at 11 :00 A. M. Friday, April 10th.
There being no further business to come before the Board, the meeting
adjourned at 11 :40 A. M.
