RESOLUTION NO. 4030-10
A RESOLUTION OF THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA, PUBLICLY
COMMENDING THE JOHN ADAMS HIGH SCHOOL'S MOCK TRIAL TEAM FOR WINNING THE 2010 INDIANA
HIGH SCHOOL MOCK TRIAL COMPETITION AND FOR ACHIEVING THE
EAGLE'S lOTFi CONSECUTIVE INDIANA CHAMPIONSHIP
"~,~1~~, the Indiana High School Mock Trial Program is designed to "stimulate & encourage a deeper
understanding & appreciation of the American legal system" where students are given the opportunity to "acquire
skills in critical thinking and reasoning, oral advocacy, team work and citizenship"; and
`'~`~%~~a~, through mock trials based on a hypothetical case, high school students gain an understanding of
society's approach to dispute resolution and justice through an experiential learning opportunity where they can
acquire skills in critical thinking and reasoning, effective communication, team work and citizenship involving a
hypothetical case where mock trial team members compete in actual courtrooms and display their knowledge; and
`'~%b, the Common Council of the City of South Bend, Indiana, is especially proud to recognize that the
John Adams High School Mock Trial Team has won the Indiana High School Mock Trial State Championships in
1997-1998, 1998-1999, 2000-2001, 2001-2002, 2002-2003, 2003-2004, 2004-2005, 2005-2006, 2006-2007, 2007-
2008, 2008-2009, 2009-2010; and
"~ z~~, the Common Council would especially like to publicly recognize each of the members of the 2009-
2010 John Adams High School Mock Trial Team called "Mark it Zero" under the direction of Judith Overmyer,
the teacher at John Adams who oversees this outstanding program, Coaches Erin Linder, John Scanlan and Lucas
Burkett; for representing the State of Indiana at the 27"' National High School Mock Trial Championship held in
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania May 6-9, 2010; and thanks each of these talented "Team Indiana" Adams students:

Section I. On behalf of all of the citizens of the City of South Bend, Indiana, the Common Council
hereby congratulates each and every member of the 2009-2010 John Adams High School Mock Trial
Team, their program's organizer and sponsor, Judith Overmyer, and coaches Lucas Burkett, Erin Linder, and
John Scanlan for winning the 2009-2010 Indiana High School Mock Trial Championship, making this the
10~h consecutive championship won by the Eagles teams.
Section II. The South Bend Common Council believes that the hard-work, discipline, and dedication
of each of these especially dedicated and talented students to be excellent role models for all students
throughout our state; and each team member has brought the highest of honors to themselves, their family
and friends, John Adams High School, the South Bend Community School Corporation, and all of the
residents of the City of South Bend, Indiana. The Council hopes that the Adams Eagles will be representing
the State of Indiana in next year's national competition in Phoenix, Arizona.
