Asbestos Inspection for 329 S Lafayette (Schillings Building)
Date: February 24, 2010
As part of our environmental study of the recently purchased 329 S Lafayette building, the
Phase 1 Environmental Site Assessment recommended obtaining an Asbestos Inspection
and related testing for the facility.
Attached is a proposal from Wightman Petrie in the amount of $6,075.00 to perform the
necessary study work. The amount includes filed inspection, lab fees, the final field report,
and coordination with an abatement contractor.
Staff requests approval of this proposal.

AT 329, S. LAFAYETTE BOULEVARD, SOUTH BEND,
Thank you for contacting Wightman Petrie (WP) regarding your potential project. We appreciate
the opportunity to provide our professional expertise and services on this matter.
PROJECT INFORMATION
The City of South Bend purchased the property located at 329 S. Lafayette Blvd., South Bend,
Indiana 46601. During the Phase I Environmental Site Assessment WP observed multiple
suspected asbestos containing materials, including pipe wrap and boiler insulation. At this time
WP is unaware of any plans the City may have, regarding the future of the subject property.
This inspection would assist the City in knowing what renovations or abatement will be needed
before reutilization, renovation or demolition of the subject building. WP will also coordinate
with a private asbestos abatement contractor to deliver an approximate price for removal of any
asbestos containing material.
COST INFORMATION AND SCHEDULE
ESTIMATED FEES:
The total fee to provide the asbestos building inspection services for the former Schillings Camera
Shop is estimated to be $6,075.00 This fee is based upon collecting 60 total samples from the
building with approximately 2 days of inspection by a pair of Indiana accredited asbestos building
inspectors. The final fee will be charged on a time and material basis so if WP determines that

more or less samples are needed the fee will be revised accordingly. WP will coordinate with the
City of South Bend so that all parties are aware of the budget and no scope changes would be
made without the City of South Bend granting approval.
Task 1 -Field Inspection $2,950.00
Task 2 -Laboratory Fees & Sampling Supplies - $10/sample $675.00
Task 3 -Inspection Report & Figures $1,900.00
Task 4 -Coordination with Abatement Contractor 550.00
Total Professional Services Lump Sum Fee: $6,075.00
