My cormnission expires, 9/11/44. now therefore, be it resolved by the Board of Public Works and Safety of South Bend, tha all public streets, alleys and public places be dedicated to the public use in said plat is hereby accepted and approved by said Board for and on behalf of the City of South Bend, Indiana. 1 0 ELECTRIC DEPARTMIENT: Mr. Qualls was present and reported that a 1000 lumen lamp had been installed on Arnold St., at the alley between Indiana Ave., and Prairie Ave., also two two boulevard type lights 2500 lumen output on the north side of Western Ave., in the first half-block,west of Main St. He also reported that a 1000 lumen lamp had been installed on Wilber St., at the entrance to Langley St. The mayor has referred to this Board, a letter 'from J. B. Emmons, Chairman of the State Legion Convention Committee, whose convention is to be held in South Bend, August 16, 17, 18 and 19, 1941, asking permission to use the Council Chambers for committee meetings dpring that period. It was moved, seconded and unanimously carried that they be given permission to use the Council Chambers at such hours when the use of same will not interfer with the meet- ings of the Common Council or the City Court. The Board approved the purchase of a Burroughs Bookkeeping Machine, to be used by the Controllerts Office, at a price of $1492.50. There being no further business to come before the Board, the meeting adjourned at 12:20 P. M. on November 18th, and no remonstrances having been filed with the Board and no one having appeared in opposition to said resolution, it was moved, seconded and unanimously carried that the resolution #2503 vacating said alley be finally adopted and.said alley be vacated. The Engineering Department is directed to prepare an assessment roll covering the benefits and damages to the surrounding property. WHEREAS, Irene M. Redden and Earl J. Redden, her husband, of St. Joseph County, Indiana do hereby grant to the City of South Bend, Indiana or its successors, the right to lay, maintain, operate, alter, repair and remove a sewer, together with all manholes, • structures, pumping stations and appurtenances connected therewith, by an easement thru and over the following described real estate, to -wit: Beginning at a point on the East boundary of Lot 13 in Major's Addition to the City of South Bend, 245 feet North of the South- east corner thereof, thence North 410 43t 'Nest, 26 feet more or less to the low water mark of the St. Joseph River, thence North- easterly along the St. Joseph River to the East line of said Lot 13, thence South along the East line of said Lot 13 to the point of beginning. Inc.., and Philip Cohn. 572 MEETING -- NOVEMBER 18, 1940 ELECTRIC DEPARTMENT: It was moved, seconded and unanimously carried that the recommend tion of Mr. Qualls, Electrical Superintendent, with respect to the petition for a light at the intersection of Dubail Ave., and Taylor St. be accepted. The report reads in part as follows: "I can see no reason for light at Dubail and Taylor St. -that cannot be found at any street intersection that is not olluminated. Taylor St. is paved and Dubail is not paved and is quite rough, so I do not see s traffic hazard. The block north of Dubail St. has treet on both sides of Taylor St. and in the full foliage the light at Indiana and Taylor Sts., is undoubtedly obscured. At this time the foliage is removed, which will permit this light to shine through. I do not recommend the additional light at this time." It was moved, seconded and unanimously carried that the recommendation. -of Mr. Qual with respect to the petition for a light in the alley on Cleveland Ave., between Califor nia Ave., and Van Buren St, be accepted. His recommendation reads in part, as follows "Of course, it is a long block between Van Buren St., and California Ave... and twee;interference is very heavy. Even with the foliage off,the trees still interfer with the illumination on the street from the lights at the intersection. Natuarlly, the middle of the block is dark, but the same holds true on Blaine, Allen, Sherman and all the other streets in this section. if we put a light on Cleveland at the alley, these other streets will also want a light in similar locations. I appreciate the fact that it is dark, but"until we can put a light at street intersections thruout the City, where it is also dark, I cannot find myself favoring the location of lights at alleys in favored sections that have lights at every street intersection, especially when the street could be better illuminated with existing facilities by trimming the trees. I am sure the balance of the street light appropriation can be used to better advantage by placing lights at street intersections that have no lights at this time. Most of the streets have lights every two blocks." STREET DEPARTMENT: Mr. Tony Zmudzinski, Street Commissioner was present and matters pertaining to his department were discussed. Mr. Zmudzinski turned over to the Board $1.10 for the sale of junk, and $7.00 for use of the grader for 3-1/2 hrs. on the parking lot at the Edwards Iron Works. There being no further business to come before the Board, the meeting adjourned at 11:4IL; A. M.
