Regular meeting of the Board of Works was held at 9:15 A.I.A. on A:A onday, February
27, 1939. All members were present. Minutes of the previous neeting were read and
approved. Payrolls of the various departments were approved in the amount of
$4,728.79 and claims of the following suppliers in the amount of �}384.26 were ap-
proved and ordered paid:

' Rev. Roscoe Wilson of the First'United Brethren Church appeared before the
Board and requested that additional lighting facilities be maintained in the 100
block East South Street between St. Joseph Street and IV!ichigan Street; that in the
past considerable molestation has taken place in this territory and at eo are
taking street cars to his ch r. ' and returning by street cars nights,4. y
-'will not have to travel tha7 rritory. The matter was referred to theElectrical
Department for investigation and -report.
V�Mr. Clyde E. Williams, City Civil Engineer, submitted the following resolution
for the vacation of an alley north of North Side Boulevard from Louise Street to
Roberts Avenue, same being Resolution No. 2500 reading as follows:
RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF PUBLIC SORKS OF THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND, INDIAIVA: That it is
desirable to vacate the following:
ALLEY NORTH OF NORTH, SIDE BOILEVARD
from Louise Street to rrtoberts Avenue.
The following property may be injuriously or beneficially effected by such
vacation:
Lots 48, 492 50 & 51 Barer & McHenry Addition.
Notice of this resolution shall be published on the 3rd day of IIarch and on the
loth day of March, 1939 in the SouthBend Daily Tribune and weekly I,Tirror.
This Board, at its office in the City Hall on the 20th day of IMarch, 1939, at
10:00 A.11. will hear and receive remonstrances from. all -_persons interested in or af-
gected by these proceedings.

✓Mr. Bert Holycross of Holycross_Nye, Ford Dealers, appeared before theBoard
and requested that Ford trucks.be considered Then the city, purchases trucks for WPA
Today being the date set for hearingm VacationResolutions No. 2491, 2492 and
2493 and the Northern Indiana_ P-cblic Bervice Company having filed with the Board blue
prints and information shotiiing that the`- maintain gas pipes in certain alleys effecte
by these vacation resolutions and that they have requested the interested parties to
furnish easements before Vacation proceedings are completed, giving them the right to
maintain and repair the mains on said property and the easements not having been
presented, it is, therefore, moved that these vacation resolutions be postponed until
March 13, 1939, during which time the interested parties will have an opportunity to
procure and present easements.
✓ The Board approved the construction of driveways .for Slicks Laundry i n accordanc
with the plans submitted and the Engineer was authorized to notify Mr. Slick that a
permit must be obtained from the Engineering DepartTient for making the necessary im-
provements upon city property and that the work must be done by a person having
submitted. a contractor's bond approved by the Board of --public Works and that a blue
Print of the plan approved must be on file in the `-IoarcL of Wor'Is T office.
✓A formal petition was filed by the Twyckenham Land & Investment Corlpany for re -
spread of Assessment Roll No. 2154--Fairview Avenue Local Sewer and it was referred
to the City_ Attorney for investigation and report.
�Mr. Zr udzinski, Street Commissioner, was present and matters pertaining to his
department were discussed.
An accident which occurred on February 22, 1939, on Ss ple and Lincolnway East,
between a Street Department Truck driven by James Perry and a truck owned by the

R. C. 0. Transfer gompany was reported. The claimant was instructed to report to
the insurance company.

SPECIAL MEET ING- -FEBRUARY 28. 1939
The Board, in special session, Tuesday,-, February 28, 1939, at 11 30 A.1,11., entered
into an agreement to purchase ten (10) 12 tor_ dual tired trucks, two (2) with chassis
only, and eight (8) with Dower operated hydraulic dump bodies. The total cost of this
equipment amounted to W,951.20.
✓ An agreement was also entered into to purchase special dump and hydraulic hoist
equipment at a total cost of l,2980.00 from the n. C. Larkin Company of Chicago, Ill.
to be installed upon the two chassis.
Due to a request for additional trucks for city sponsored `rv. P. A. projects and also
due to the dilapidated condition of the Street Department trucks, the Board has con-
sidered the purchase of new t-rucks.for the Street Department and the use of the Street
Department truces on V'I.P.A.projects. Proposals were obtained from Scherman-Schaus-
1 reeman Company, Holycross & 1- ye, Bogda, Inc., and the International Harvester Company.
These proposals were presented to all members of the Council and a request made for ad-
vice as to where the purchase should be made, if it was agreeable with the Council to
purchase the equipment.

The purpose of the meeting having been accomplished, the meeting adjourned at
12 : 00 P1.
