'Regular meeting of the Board of Public .'tiorks was held on Monday, January 9, 1939,
at 9:00 A.M. All me tiers were present.

✓Upon appeal made from t he Building Department to the Board of Works by Herschel G.
Wray, representative of the Gunnison Roust=ng Corporation, the Board, upon motion duly
passed, authorized the issuance of permits for the constructions of this particular
type of home. Mr. I.Toomaw, Building Conriiissi_:ner, presented figures indicating that
certain structural me(, -.bens of sizes not in compliance with the code, were strengthened
by the bonding together of sections :into one unit. This process is employed by the
Gunnison manufacturers. A suggestion was made that an advisory coimiiittee be appointed
to make a study of present standards of construction and materials used in order that
the building code may be brought up to present standards.
✓The Polish American Civic Corru-nittee met with the Board and requested the f ollosi i_n_g
i -orovements: (1) That a watchman be stat.oned at the Grand Trunk Cross2ng and �dalnut
Street because of t_ne hazardous condit -on created "there by the present signal operator,'
being located some two bloc'-s away. This was referred to t he City Civil Engineer for
investigation and report. (2) Teat the roadway crossing be improved at Vlalnut and the
Grand Trunk Railroad. This also was referred tot lie City Civil Engineer. (3) That
light service on Olestern Avenue at the -oIew York Central underpass be extended over a
twenty-four hour per-od or at least until daylight is sufficient for visibility. Under
the present arrangement, these lights are turned off at 2:00 A.1 . or thereabout. T111is
matter was referred to the Electrician, I,-r. Qualls, f or investigation and a report.
(4) That boulevard li`hts be installed on Western Avenue in the business section. This
was discouraged by the Board until after definite information could be obtained as to
what the future policy of the State Hi ;hwa t Commission, which has taken over this
thoroughfare, will be.(5) That additional police protection be provided on Western Avenue
in 'he business section. (6) That sidewalks bre installed on Western Avenue between
Arnold and Scott Streets. 71ais was referred to the City Engineer f or an investigation

✓Anthony
&iudzinski, the Street Commissioner, was present and requested that the
totlLlworking hours of men on his department be reduced to 39 hours per weep inas_nuch
as work is not available at the present 'L - e for keeping the men employed at the present
rate of 44 hours and that the sav i r_g that would then be ut-ilized by reducing the hours
of work per week could be used to advantage during the summer months. He suggested a
seven hour day and four hours on Saturday. The Board approved of the reduction in
hours and advised the Street Commissioner to estaolisht he working days as he saw fit..
/A request was made for a specific doctor toy',handle all injury cases of the Street
Department empuloyees. This matter was taken under considerate on by the Board.
/A report upon the condition of the Street Department truck that was in an accident
recently was submitted. The estimated value of the truck prior to the accident was
150.00. Excepting for two tires, the truck is now valueless, except for junk.

and ordered placed on file.

of the Traffic Engineer in cindering hazardous street intersections covered with ice
and snow.
✓Mr. Qualls submitted a report, a s r equested by t he Board, upon t he need of a
street light at the Intersection of Huey and Fredrickson Streets. Mr. Qualls recom-
mended the installation of a 4000 lumen light at Huey and Fredrickson Streets, over-
head construction, mast arm with pendent fixture, at an annual cost of $32.40. The
Board, upon motion duly made, seconded and carried, moved that a light be installed
at that °ntersection, as recor.mlended by Mr. Qualls. It?. Qualls was instructed to ad-
vise the Indiana & Itfichigan Electric Company to install the light.
Lyle McNabb, Sexton of the City Cemetery, was present. The need for additxinal
files was discussed and final decision was postponed until a later date. Mr. McNabb
was advised to purchase the lawnmower repairs that are necessary. He was also
authorized to discuss the needs for "Dead End" street signs at Lincen and Hine Streets
with Traffic Engineer Miller.
✓ Upon motion d my carried, a contract for the furnishing of all e leotric light bulbs
for the city buildings was entered into between t he Board of Public `hlorks and the
MlcCaffery Company. A copy of this was ordered placed on file.
The custodian was ordered to maintain the flag at half mast for ten clays in reteren
to the deceased, George Oneelock, a member of the Pare Board.

Upon 'notion duly made and carried, the Board approved a contract between Alex S.
Langel, as Portage Township Trustee, and the Board of Public ''+`forks and Safety providing
.for the pavrnent of $6.75 per man per month to the City for the purpose of purchasing
materials for IN. P. A. projects. Upon motion duly made by Harry S. Driggs, seconded
by George N. Beamer and carried the contract was executed by the Board and was to be
submitted to tl--,.e Council for their approval. The Clerk was ordered to keep a copy of
this contract on file.
VThe Board atiithorized the purchase of 30.,000 feet of oak lumber to be usedd-for
sheeting .on W.P.A. projects and to be charged to, the Special IM.P.A. fund.

✓ This being the date set for hearing on/Resolution No. 2499., the date o f hearing
was postponed until January 23, 1939.
