MEETING May 17, 1937
Regular meeting of the Board of Public Works was held on Monday, May 17, 1937,
at 10:00 A. M. All members were present.

/ This being the date set
for opening of bids for repair and painting of
Colfax
Avenue Bridge, as advertised,
the following bids were received:
Repairs to Bridge

After duly considering the above bids, the Board decided to place the contract for
the repairs with Charles A. Jordan Company. The contract for the painting was
withheld and bids were taken under consideration for later decision.
Mr. Frederick J. Anderson, City Civil Engineer, filed primary assessment roll
showing awards of damages and assessment of benefits in the matter of vacation of
alley north of Sample street from the alley west of LaFayette Street to the west
line of Garst's Addition, also 2nd alley west of LaFayette Blvd. from the south
line of Tutt Street projected west, to Sample Street, same being Vacation Resolution
2488. In the above named Assessment Roll the Board hereby orders that on the 1st
day of June 1937 it will meet in the City Hall at 10:30 A. M. to hear and receive
remonstrances from all persons interested in or effected by said vacation resolution
and Board further orders notices of said hearing be advertised in two newspapers
in South Bend on May 20th and May 27th and that notices together with amount of
damages awarded or benefits assessed be addressed to the property owners according

Continuation certificate covering contractor's bond in favor of J. Fred
Christman in the Continental Casualty Company was approved by the Board.
Continuation certificate covering contractor's bond in favor of H. C. Parrott
in the Continental Casualty Company was approved by the Board.

The Board approved contract for the purchase of a certain described real estate
as follows:
j CONTRACT FOR THE PURCHASE OF CERTI-SN DESCRIBED REAL ESTATE
This agreement entered into by and between Thomas H. Jackson and Laura Dell
Jackson, husband and wife, of St. Joseph County, and George W. Jackson, single, of
St. Joseph County, and Emma M. Jackson and Charles A. Jackson, her husband, of
Elkhart County, hereinafter referred to as parties of the first Dart and Frederick J
Anderson, Edwin W. Hunter end Fred Woodward, constituting the Board of Public Works
and Safety of the Municipal City of South Bend, hereinafter referred to as parties
of the second part.
W'ITNESSE`I'H :
THAT WHEREAS, parties of the first part are owners of the following described
real estate situated in St. Joseph County, Indiana:
The East 1 of the North 1 of the Southwest
4 of the Northwest 4 of Section 54, Town-
ship 38 North, Range 2 East, containing 10
acres more or less.
AND WHEREAS, it is the desire of the parties of the second part to purchase

said property for a gravel pit for the Municipal City of South Bend.
IT IS STIPULATED AND AGREED by and between the parties that parties of the
second part, subject to the approval of the Common Council of the City of.South Bend,
Indiana, will purchase the property above described from parties of the first part
for the sum of Five Thousand Dollars ($5,000.00).upon the furnishing to parties of
the second part or their assigns of good and merchantable title to the property
described showingno incumbrances or liens against said real estate, and that parties
of the first hart stipulate and agree, upon the approval of the action of the Board
of Public Works and Safety in purchasing said property above described by the Common
Council of the City of South Bend, that they will furnish and deliver unto the said
City of South Bend a Warranty Deed with abstract showing good and sufficient right
to convey the property set out in this agreement upon the payment by the Municipal
City of South Bend to parties of the first part or their assigns the sum of Five
Thousand Dollars ($5,000.00) as set out in this agreement.
To the carrying .out of this agreement and the provisions and terms hereof the
parties bind themselves, their heirs and successors this 17th day of May, 1937.

Mr. R. G. Merrill, president of the M. B. Skinner Company, made a request that
the parkways opposite their factory be trimmed, and after considering the matter, the
Board referred it to the Park Department for attention.
The Board discussed with Mr. deer the various properties which the City is now
using for dumps and Mr. Weer outlined the following as being used at the present time:
Hoffman Gravel Pit on Merry Avenue, mile north of Lincoln Way West.
Beck's Lake.
Randolph and Robinson Streets.
Across from Rum Village Woods on Ewing Avenue.
The City Attorney was instructed to draw up an Ordinance to be submitted to the
Common Council approving the contract, a copy of which is outlined above, entered into
for the purchase of this described property.
The meeting adjourned at 11:00 A. M.
