Regular meeting of the Board of Public Works was held on Monday, May 25, 1936, at
10 A. M. All members were present.
Minutes of previous meeting were read and approved.
Claims in the amount of 1,158.11, from the following suppliers, were approved
and ordered paid, also payroll
of the various departments for the last half of May
amounting to 5,346.81.

Representatives of the Polish American
Central Civic Committee were present
and
requested consideration on the
following subjects:
Western Avenue and Walnut subway - they claimed many accidents are occurring, due
to the construction and poor lighting. The Board informed them that a survey was being
made of the situation and some recorrxc.endetion would undoubtedly be made in the near
future.
Cutting corners at Olive Street and Western Avenue - this improvement was agreed
to by the Boerd several weeks ago, but the Committee wras informed that due to the fact
that at the present time no W.P.A. project had been established for improvement of
sidewalks, some delay would be experienced in making this improvement.
Traffic signal at Olive Street and I:'estern Avenue - the Board informed the
Committee that this matter had been before them on several occasions and that u-0 to now
they found no way of making this installation.
Elevation of Grank Trunk and L-ichigen branch of the New York Central at Walnut
Street - the Cor~ .ittee claimed that this rr_etter had been proposed but not completed
in 1930 and that they urged it be elevated. The Board informed them that the records
would be investigated to ascertain the approximate cost to the City and that they would
be informed of the amount involved which would have to be established before the project
could be undertaken.
The Health Department requested that the walls in that department be cleaned
during the summer and the matter was referred back to their_ with instructions to have
the janitors do this work as they found time.
A communication was received from !.-rs. H. A. Edres regarding the dumping of
rubbish on property on 20th Street. The matter was referred to the Board of Public
Health.
11r. Paul Burrnac, 313 Franklin Street, referred to the Board the matter of the
alley between Franklin and William Streets from Calvert Street south to Donald Street
which has never been opened, requesting that this be done. The matter was referred
to the Street Department for investigation and recommendation.
Mr. Fred Anderson reported on the communication received from Attorney Orie Parker
in reference to location on Twyckenhem Drive south of South Bend Avenue which is being
used as a dump. Mr. Anderson's investigation disclosed the fact the.t-there.is a deep
hole at the place formerly used as a gravel pit and that according to the Assessor's
plat book this property is owned by N. L. Davis.
The communication, unsigned, which was referred to the Engineering. Department
regarding private sewers on Lincoln Way East from 1-'iami Street to Vernon Street,
11r. Anderson reported that the owners of property on the south side of Lincoln way East
also own the property between Lincoln Way East and the river end have built their own
outlets. He also reported that W.P.A. workers cleaning the river bank have informed
us that in grCding the bank they have uncovered some of these sewers but have lowered
the outlets where they found them. Re -port is n_ leced on file in the office of the
Board of Public Works.
Mir. Weer submitted his monthly report for February 1936 of the activities of the
Street Department and W.P.A. projects, which is on file in the office of the Board of
Public Works.
A complaint was received with reference to the situation at Logan ,Street and North
Shore Boulevard at the foot of 34th, 35th and 36th Streets and that an unsightly
situation has been created, due to that section being; used as a dump and also the

property being used by Siam, the Wrecker. The matter was referred to the City Attorney
for investigation.
Edward Rotzoll of 719 North Brookfield Street submitted a sketch and requested
the privilege of breaking out the curb on Rupel Street at his garage. The matter was
referred to the Engineering Department for investigation.
Fire insurance policy coverings hose house #11, 2222 Lincoln.Way West, in the
Detroit Fire & Marine Insurance Company for $10,000.00 was approved by the Board.
Burglary and hold-up insurance, covering all municipal city offices for one year ,
was approved by the Board in the United States Fidelity and Guaranty Company.
