Regular meeting of the Board of Public Works was held on Tuesday, September 3,
1935 at 11:15 A. M. Mr. Hunter was absent.
Minutes of meeting of August 26th were read and approved.
Claims in the amount of $45.88, from the following suppliers, were approved and
ordered paid
Lumber Mutual Agency $37.13.
South Bend Clean Towel Service 8.75
ELECTRICAL DEPARTMENT - Mr. Qualls present:
Mr. Qualls submitted a sketch showing recommended replacement and re -location of
the electric light poles on West North Shore Drive between Leeper Avenue and Niles
Avenue. Upon his recommendation, the Board instructed him to take the matter up with
the Indiana & Michigan Electric Company to carry out the suggested program.
Several -members of the Polish -American Central Civic Committee were present and
submitted a request which was the result of meeting of that Committee requesting
that the Board of Works take such steps as will be necessary to bring about the
and re -surfacing of Western Avenue at once. At the same meeting was present
Anthony Bucholtz, President of the Western Avenue Improvement Association, who stated
that in his opinion the majority of those affected in the district were in favor of
having Western Avenue widened from Michigan Street to Olive Street. Due to the
apparent variance in the desires of these two.Associations, the Board instructed them
to iron out their differences and meet with the Board the following day - on Wednesday-,
September 4th.
Mr. O. J. Goffeney, architect representing the Standard Oil Company, presented
plans for re -construction of several Filling Stations now operating in South Bend, and,
upon analysis of the plans, the Board instructed them to revise same, so that the
openings in the approaches would be not wider tY&n thirty feet.
CEMETERY DEPARTMENT -'Mr. Longenecker present:
Mr. Longenecker reported progress made at the Cemetery and stated that he had
received additional help from the Federal Authorities to carry on the work.
Mr. Longenecker submitted his report for the month of August, showing receipts of
$348.50, which showed four burials and perpetual care on one lot.
Insurance policy in the Indiana Lumberman's Mutual Insurance Company of Indian-
apolis for 2,500.00, covering Street Department office, fixtures and merchandise for
a period of three years from September 3, 1935, was approved by the Board.
Twenty-year Guaranty Bond in the United States Fidelity and Guaranty Company of
Baltimore, covering new roof recently placed on the Police and Fire Alarm Station by
John Beyrer & Sons Company, was approved by the Board.
The meeting adjourned at 12:10 P. M.
