Regular meeting of the Board of Public Works was held Monday, June 3rd, at 11:30
A.M. All members were present.
The minutes of meeting of May 27th were read and approved.
Claims in the amount of $360.67 were -approved and ordered paid by the Controller.
Mr. William Moore appeared before the Board with reference to the alley east of
Niles: Ave. south from Crescent Ave. asking that this either be vacated or graded to
relieve a bad situation in rainy weather. The matter was referred to Mr. Anderson of
the Engineering Department for disposition.
Senator C. A. Perkins presented -a plan for the construction of a filling station
at Lincoln Way Test and Wilbur Streets and, as this plan did not entirely come within
the requirements of the Board so far as openings are concerned, the matter was referred
to Mr. Anderson of the Engineering Department who.will confer with Senator Perkins and
adopt some plan that will be satisfactory to the Board.
Mr. Neer reported the activities of the Street Department for the month of May and
gave a complete list of the work done, which report is on file in the office of the
Board of Public Works.
Mr. Longenecker advised the Board that he had been receiving complaints from lot
• owners whose lots abut the ravine, and some of them have raised objections to filling
in this ravine. The Board instructed him to have these people bring in their deeds to
determine definitely the boundary of their lots. It was moved, seconded and carried
that he go ahead with this filling in work until advised to the contrary by the Board
of Works.
A letter from Mr. W. G. Crabill was read calling attention to a serious situation
at the east approach of Angella Avenue Bridge- he stating that the bridge being
narrower than the highway it is important that the guards be in suitable condition and
that only part of the present guard fence is still standing and it needs repair and
painting. This matter has been referred to the Street Department with instructions to
arrange forthe repair at once.
• A resolution signed by fifteen chapters of various labor unions in the city urging
the City of South Bend and its Board of Public Works to make application for sewage
disposal plan was received- and ordered placed on file.
An agreement with the New Jersey, Indiana & Illinois Railroad Company for the
construction, maintenance and operation by the Railroad of an industrial sidetrack
across Olive Street near the intersection of Indiana Ave. was submitted, approved by
the Board and referred to the Common Council.

Insurance on the Board of Health Plymouth Coupe, covering Fire, Theft, Public
Liability and Property Damage placed through Hill & Pensinger, was approved by the
Board.
Mr. Weer proposed to the Board that the present Street Department building be torn
down and a new building put up in the same location, using the salvage of material and
F.E.R.A. labor, which would give the Street Department much needed improved quarters.
The Board instructed Mr. Neer to bring in a definite plan and an account of the :cost..,
for discussion at the next Board Meeting.
The Meeting adjourned at 12:30 P.M.
