Ba.iley, Street Coxrm?issioner, were also present. Charles .16. Bailey, Street 8omm.issioner, reported the progress of the wIDrk in the street department under FERA and same was found satisfactory. Upon the recommendation of Charles E. Bailey, Street Commissioner!,- the Board ordered the.t Bob harri s, foreman in the Street Department, be allowed 50 gallons • of easoline each month in his car for use in his work in the Street Department. The following letter was received from. the Board of Public Safety and order- ed placed on file: "Sept 221 1934 Boa rd of Public Works, South Bend, Indiana. Gen. tlemen: • We have your letter of the 19th., inst. with reference to the vacating of the space now being used for the dof-- pound. It is our understanding that -,our Board he s the custody of all real property of the city. In your letter you f,il to adt*ise us where you intend to locate this depart ment a.nci- until you do assign adequate quarters, the dog pound, of necessity, will remain in its present location. Bailey, was returned to the Board, vith a letter from 1=r. Bailey, giving a full report on same: "South bend, Indi. ana , September 18, 1934 Board of Public Works, - South Bend, Indiana. Gent le men : As per our conversation, I em writing to explain the accident that has occurred to me z)und.ay vening, September 16t!-;, y 1934. i As I was tr.-ve ling east on Inc? iana Avenue and appr oaehing Swyg-art Street, I rode :giver a. se;.rer cpver, which when riding- over was opened, damaging the cars right • front and right rear wheels, springing axle, damaging running board and fenders, both tires, blaving out. Bill enclosed A32.10. 0 II Lr. Bailey's letter is as follows: "Septe*ber 22, 1934 Board of Public forks, South Bend, Indiana. Gentlemen: Regarding the attached letter from Ernest J. Foek, 107 h. Donald Street, under date of September 18th. , reporting an accident claimed to have happened Sunday evening, �'jpptember 16th. aThis letter was the first report we have receiveC indicating an open manhole or loose manhole cover at lndienrn Avenue and bwygart. the letter would indicate the lo- cation to be on Indiana avenue to the west of the intersection of Syweart and Indiana. 64 IJond.ay, �eptenber 24, 1934 Vie received this letter about 4 P. 11., `bursday, and an inspection was made of the condition of the manhole covers in this locality by Prank Wineek ( Garage Foreman) who reported that there were no indications that any manhole had been open or cover loose recently. After receiving this report from 1.1r. Wincek, a. further inspection was made by 11r. A. Y. Long, G,,nera3 Foremen of btreets, who found that all three manhole covers rere solidly tarred d oxen and had not been open for some time. Our findins'in.dicate positively tlst if Iir., Pock h1.d such an accident as he reports, it must have occurred in some toher locality and we have received no repot of any loose or open mehholes in the past ten days that would indicate to us ,that a=ny_mch accident had happened. I. S. Romig, for final disposition of the matter. Gity Enpineer, W. S. The paving material to be used in u king se id improvement , shall be sheet asphalt, asphaltic cone re to , brick, or r ortland cerne3kt concrete pavement. The found- ation shall be portland cement concrete six inches (6't) thick, or crushed stone, for the sheet asphalt, asphaltic concrete, a.nd brick. "einforced curb well shall be built upon present curb ,-;-all, concrete walk and concrete curb shall be constructed along said streets and alleys where same is necessary. Yanholes, storm water inlets and conduits shell be constructed where necessary. Also water and sewer connections shall be constructed .from the different mains to a point six inches (6") inside the curb lines, where necessary. All mamhole tops and storm water inlets shall be set to the proper grade. Concrete marginal curb shall be constructed at all street and alley intersections where necessary; all as .s more particularly shown and ell in • accordance with the plans, profiles, detail drawings, and specifications on file in the office of the department of Public 'Works of the amity of bouth Bend, Indiana.. In the above named. improvement resolution No.248O, the Board being fully advised in the premises, takes finel action on said resolution No.2480, and declares same in all things ratified, confirmed and approved. The Board approved claims in the sum of 8433.33 for salaries to be paid out of Track Zleva Lion kund and the Board hereby orders City Controller to pa$r some ouf the Track Elevation fund.
