HomeMy WebLinkAbout10-07-14 CCAC Meeting Minutes Community/Campus Advisory Coalition (CCAC) SAINT g VNNEN3l,' z Tim Sexton: Finals are coming up next week. Things have been quiet lately on campus. He also shares that Crime Reports is a great tool. Lauren Vidal: They are hosting a webinar with NDSP and will be fielding live questions. Students can submit questions prior to the webinar, or during the webinar. They will share some basic information about safety and securing homes while students are gone for break. They worked with the Center for the Homeless and 29 families were paired with 29 resident halls. They will provide trees, tickets to sporting events, etc. to the families in need. Robert Hammer: He would like to remind students to leave valuables with neighbors while gone on break. Also to have someone shovel walks and have a neighbor check on the house. There was some discussion about concerns that Fred Ferlic had shared with Bob. He indicates there needs to be more police presence and asked if there is enough being done to prevent crimes. Are there solutions to the crimes? The message is there needs to be more awareness and community involvement. McKenna Schuster: After the last meeting she talked with Robert and Lauren about the Taxi situation, and how to find a reliable company. She will pass along the information that Tasha provides to students so they are aware of the laws. She asked if SBPD couples with St. Mary's and Bob Hammer says yes. Dr. Jordan also says he is working with security to form a tri- campus security. He is trying to have this in place before break. Kelly Jordan: He advised they are focusing on 3 things: 1) What can they do to help crime? 2) Working closely with law enforcement and 3) Crime alerts — he says these are really good, but they are not immediate. He would like something in place so that students know immediately of things that are happening. He says the biggest threat at this time is infectious disease. They are putting some things in place to make people aware of what to do if they are in contact with an infectious disease. He reports that they made and distributed 62 Thanksgiving baskets. Dan Allen: There are educational sessions to help with students moving off campus. They will work with students who live on and off campus. Lauren says they are working on a security video and will share it with all once it is complete. Mark Kramer: No issues to discuss. Reminder to students to have someone shovel walks while they are gone to show activity around the house. Make sure all doors and windows are closed and locked before leaving for break. Mike Grzegorek: He reminds that it's also important to know what to do when they come back from break—don't put electronic boxes in the trash. Burglars are looking for these. Tasha Reed Outlaw: She will provide the taxi cab information to everyone via email. If a taxi is not providing the proper service it needs to be reported. She also mentions the temporary lawn parking permits. Home owners/residents must have these if there will be cars parked on the grass, even if they are not charging for the parking. In July 2015, they would like to send notices to residents to advise of the permits, which will hopefully prevent citations. 2 w Christine Barlos: She is happy to be part of the group. University Edge broke ground on 2 new buildings. They are developing some new security procedures along with Roseland Police Department, who will be driving through the area at various days/times to check the area. Trent Spoolstra: He reminds students not to leave cars parked on the street while they are gone on break. Vacant and Abandoned homes — 727 of 1000 homes have been addressed. On property where demolitions have occurred they will be planting clover on a trial basis to decrease the cost of mowing the grass. If the clover is successful there will be more planted. Mayor Pete: He thanked everyone for being a part of the group and that there are many positive things that come from it. He wished everyone a Happy Holiday. The next CCAC meeting was tentatively scheduled for Tuesday,January 27, 2015 at 3:30 p.m. at the County-City Building, 4th Floor, Council Chambers. Council Member Gavin Ferlic thanked everyone again for their input and involvement and adjourned the meeting at 4:10 p.m.
