HomeMy WebLinkAbout04-23-14 CCAC Meeting Minutes Community/Campus Advisory Coalition (CCAC) COLLEGE •��•�' The April 23, 2014 Community/Campus Advisory Coalition (CCAC) was called to order by Council Member at Large Gavin Ferlic at 3:30 p.m. in the Council Informal Meeting Room, 4`h Floor County-City Building in downtown South Bend. He asked that everyone check their profile and make any revisions and/or additions. Under the topic of"Updates" the following information was shared: Fred Ferlic: Noticed an increase in violence since October that has been unreported. They presented to NNRO last week for their involvement. Positive things will happen and there is progress being made. Dr. Jordan asked if crime has increased since the improvement of weather. Sheriff Grzegorek advised nothing serious. Most recent crimes included breaking of windows and doors to gain entry. Sheriff Grzegorek also said there was an increase in suspicious vehicle/person calls, which is good that people are making the calls,but the calls did not result in any crime. He also said they are considering extra patrols in some areas. Molly White from Holy Cross College said she has noticed increased Police presence. Jeff Slattery: There was a burglary over the weekend — students confronted burglars and one was caught. However, the same burglars have been back 3 times in 4 days. They took a machete out of a student's room. They are advising students with ADT alarms to make sure the alarms are set. Some people are leary at night/evening times because of the recent shooting in the area. Tasha Reed Outlaw: SBPD and law enforcement notice increase in robberies in certain areas. Please be aware of surroundings. SBPD is putting more patrols in some areas. Stan Molenda: Stan advised everyone that he will be retiring but will be doing part time work. Lauren Vidal: There is concern of safety on campus during evening hours. Other than that no issues. Jay Caponigro for Tim Sexton: NNRO meeting with Fred Ferlic and Gavin Ferlic. Next meeting Chief Teachman will also be present. Ken Baierl: No issues from IUSB Robert Hammer: Police are working with Communities and Universities through off campus housing and security. Robberies more common when: victim is alone, evening, secluded area. Be aware of surrounds and make smart plans — don't be alone, take a cab. There are leads in some cases. Dr. Jordan asked about crime near the paths by bridge (933), if there is more crime in summer? Captain Hammer advised not really an annual issue. There are more transients there in the summer, but more just hanging out or sleeping on benches. There will be bike patrols there also. Sheriff Grzegorek advised to let them know if there are any issues so they can be taken care of. Santiago Garees: They are trying to implement an organization to help keep the City clean with volunteers. Would like to implement program between PD and FD for outreach and recruitment. Dr. Jordan asked if there is a link that is up and running? Garces advised there is not anything set up currently but is hoping to have a pilot implemented in the next couple of months. Right now they are just gauging the interest. The idea is that outstanding violations will be put on an open portal and citizens can check the portal and decide if they would like to do the volunteer work. Fred Ferlic advised recent studies show crime houses have many code violations. Kelly Jordan: Al Gutierrez is speaking at college tonight, April 23, 2014. Tomorrow night, April 24, 2014, is the premier of the movie Brothers at Driscol Auditorium. Holy Cross did Easter Baskets for citizens. They got names from St. Vincents and provided multiple meals and basics for families. Sheriff Grzegorek: There was a loud party at 5400 Burdett. Once they got there the people were very cooperative and respectful. He notes that things seem to be going ok once units show up at these calls. The occupants have been cooperative and haven't caused any problems. 2 Kathy Cekanski Farrand: Kathy discussed the chronic nuisance properties. Keenan Lane of the South Bend Police Department investigates these properties, which become chronic nuisance properties after 3 calls in a 60 day period. He will also advise the homeowners if they aren't the occupants of the home. This is a very proactive and effective tool for residents and businesses and will be very positive. There should be something on the news about this in the next few weeks. She also thanked Tasha Reed Outlaw and the SBPD for their involvement with this. Kathy also mentioned working closer with Santiago Garces to make the CCAC known and hope to involve more members before fall. Gavin Ferlic: Council Member Gavin Ferlic indicates that the student survey did not have a great response. He would like to see 3500 or more. He reminded everyone in the areas of education and safety to do all that you can do and to remind students to be respectful also. He also congratulated the seniors, Molly and Maureen, and wished them well. He asked them if they would still be participating in the CCAC and they indicated they would have new students to take their places. Robinson Center: Communiversity Day went well. They raised about $20,000 from Homeward Bound which will be used to support local agencies for homelessness. They currently have about 250 students who work with the Parks Department and other City Departments for projects. Bridge Project: They would like to build long term relationships with the City through internships. There will be an App for Smartphones for this project. The goal is to encourage students to stay in South Bend after they graduate. To do this there needs to be entertainment and jobs! This project is to encourage students to visit multiple venues for social experiences. Students can use the App to note their experiences...there will also be incentives for this. There are individual events and also 4 events for everyone to do together for the interaction. Council Member Gavin Ferlic made motion that the City Law Department and Office of the City Clerk would serve as the CCAC Recording Secretary. The motion was seconded and carried.
