Contract Supplement No. 2 of Indiana Avenue Contract No. 1 under 1956 General Street improvement Program
is approved by the Board and accepted.
The partial payment estimates covering work under 1956 General Street Improvement Program on Indiana Avenue
Contracts No. 1 and No. 21 and Contract No. 3 and No. 4 ofeSample Street are approved by the Board this 1
19th day of August, 1957.
Rev. Parks of Broadway E. U. B. Church requests permission to close Carroll Street from Broadway Street to'
Haney Street on Thursday, August 22, 1957 from 6 P.M. to 10P.M. for a Watermelon Feast. Permission granted.
The Board now approves the installation of traffic signals at the intersection of Logan Street and Jeffer-
son Blvd. Traffic Engineer, Ernest H. Miller, reported that the installation will be a joint project be-
tween the City of Mishawaka, Indiana the City of South Bend, Indiana since this intersection is at the
dividing line of the two cities. He also reports that work will begin this week.
Traffic signs were installed as follows:
Stop Signs on Sibley Street, both sides, at Brookfield Street
Stop Signs on Bulla Street, both sides, at Adams Street.

At the August 12 meeting of the Council the following matter was referred to the Board for appropriate
disposal and specific action: Councilman Tellson made a motion that the Board of PublicWorks and Safety
make an investigation of street names within the City of South Bend. Matter referred to the Traffic Engi
neer for investigation and report.
The Board hereby notes and accepts the filing of a petition of the Bowman Cemetery Association of St. Jo-
seph County by Jack Hildebrand, President and Cecil D. Walz, Secretary wherein said Association petitions;
the City of South Bend to accept the transfer of said cemetery pursuant to Acts of the State of Indiana
1933, Chapter 849 Section 1, Page 554 (Burns Indiana Statutes, Section 48-6017, 1950 Replacement). The
Clerk of the Board is hereby ordered to advertise of public hearing on the 9th day of September, 1957 in
the South Bend Tribune and The Record on 2 occasions to be on the 23rd and 30th days of August, 1957.

from Brookfield Street to College Street by constructing a permanent type pavement.

files, Drawings, Plans, General Details, Specifications, and Estimates approved by this Board on the 15th
day of July, 1957, be for the improvement of Vassar Avenue from Brookfield Street to College Street by con-
structing a permanent type Class "C" Pavement be and the same are hereby adopted and ordered placed on file
in the office of the Department of Public Works and Safety.
Sept. 31 1957 at the hour of 10:00 A.M. (DST) is hereby fixed as the time and the office of the Board of
Public Works and Safety in the City Hall of this City, as the place, when and where the Board of Public
Works and Safety will open and consider bids for the above named improvements, provided all bids for the
construction of said work shall be filed in the office of the Clerk of this Board before 10:00 A.M. (DST).
Each bidder for said work shall enclose with his bid a certified check, payable to the Treasurer of this
City in the sum of 2-2 percent of the amount of his bid, or a bid bond for 22 percent of the amount of this
bid$ to insure the execution of this contract) if said work is awarded to him.
The Clerk of this Board is hereby, ordered to give notice by 2 weekly publications of the time and place, when

adoped July 15, 1957 from Approximately 200 feet North of Ewing Street to Donald Street by constructing
a Local & Trunk Sewers. After hearing all persons interested who appeared and being fully advised on the
premises and the Clerk of the Board having shown proofs of publication of the notices to property owners
and the same having been found sufficient, the Board decides that the benefits to the property liable to
be assessed for said improvement are equal to the setimated cost of the same as reported by the City Civil
Engineer, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED, by the Board of Public Works and Safety of the City of South Bend, Indiana, that Improvemen
Resolution No. 2856, 1957, duly passed by this Board on July 15, 1957, for the above improvement, be and

A letter was sent to the St. Joseph Hospital regarding the smoke problem in the immediate area of said
hospital. Raymond S. Andrysiak, City Engineer, informed the Board of his investigation at the hospital.
VACATION RESOLUTION NO. 2864, 1957
RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF PUBLIC WORKS OF THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA, That it is desirable to vacate
the following:
1. Bryan Street from the East line of Cushing Street easterly a distance of 748 feet to
the easterly line of Lot 265 extended southerly across said Bryan Street.
2. An alley 14 feet in width running in a northerly and southerly direction from the north
line of Beale Street North to the south line of an alley running easterly and westerly
between the eastline of Cushing Street And the St. Joseph River, which said alley is
bounded on the West by the easterly line of Lots numbered 252, 259, and 267 in Northwest
Third Addition and which said alley is bounded on the East by the westerly line of Lots
251, 260, and 266 of part of Northwest Third Plat.
3. An alley, being 14 feet in width east and west, running north and south from the north
line of an alley running east and west between Beale Street and Bryan Street northerly
to the South line of an alley which runs in an easterly and westerly direction between
the east line of Cushing Street and the St. Joseph River, which said alley being vacated
is bounded on the west by the east line of Lots 260 and 266 in Northwest Third Addition
and on the east by the west line of Lots 261 and 265 of Northwest Third Plat.
4. An alley 14 feet in width east and west running in a northerly and southerly direction
from a point on the north line of Bryan Street north to the southline of an alley running
in an easterly and westerly direction between the eastline of Cushing Street and the St.
Joseph River, which said alley is bounded on the west by the east line of Lot 265 and on
the east by the west line of Lot 264 of Northwest Third Plat.
5. An alley 14 feet in width North and South running east and west between Bryan Street and
Beale Street from the east line of Cushing Street easterly a distance of 374.04 feet, all
in Northwest Third Addition.
6. An alley 14 feet in width running in an easterly and westerly direction fromthe east line
of Cushing Street easterly a distance of 1002 feet, which said alley is the first alley
north of Bryan Street and is bounded on the south by the north line of Lots 264, 2659 266,
and 267 of Northwest Third Plat.
